Visiting the Museum of Illusions Paris

The Museum of Illusions Paris offers an interactive experience that transports visitors into a world where reality and illusion collide in unexpected ways. Located in the heart of Paris, this unique space draws curious visitors of all ages with its playful and educational exhibits. Our editors have identified this site as one of the best family-friendly museums in Paris, and it is also featured in our guide to the best activities to do with your children.

Trompe-l'oeil and interactive displays

Upon entering, you are greeted by an enigmatic atmosphere that sets the stage for a disorienting visual adventure. The museum houses an impressive collection of optical illusions, trompe-l'oeil, and interactive devices that defy human perception. The exhibits are designed to stimulate the mind and spark surprise, offering a fresh perspective on how we interpret the world around us. Your ability to distinguish reality from deceptive appearances will be tested more than once.

One of the museum highlights is the vortex tunnel, where visitors are challenged to walk straight for a few meters. It sounds simple enough, but the swirling imagery on the walls is enough to make anyone lose their balance.

An educational approach

The Museum of Illusions Paris is more than just a place for entertainment; it is also educational. It provides detailed explanations of the scientific principles behind every illusion, allowing visitors to understand the mechanisms that trick their senses. This approach makes the visit rewarding for science and art enthusiasts, as well as for families looking for an educational outing.

Regularly updated temporary exhibits

In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibits that regularly add new elements to the experience. These installations may feature contemporary artists, innovative setups, or specific themes related to the study of illusions.

Really nice

This museum is super cool and a nice change from the museums we usually visit. It is really fun and entertaining. Perfect for an outing with friends or family. You can get some great photos. Plan for about an hour for the visit, as it is not very big.

So much fun!

The Museum of Illusions is really fun to do as a couple, with friends, and of course with kids. Even though the entrance ticket seemed a bit pricey to me for the duration of the experience, which is ultimately pretty short, the different workshops are very well done and allow for taking fun photos. Be careful though, because during busy periods, it can be a little annoying to wait between each illusion.

Fun but small

I went to the Museum of Illusions in Paris when it first opened. It gets really crowded, so it is better to book ahead. The rooms follow one another with well-known illusions, like putting your head on a table so it looks like it has been cut off, or giving the impression of walking on the ceiling thanks to upside-down decor. You can take photos, and it is fun and playful. But I was left wanting more because the visit is done in less than an hour, which is pretty frustrating.

Deceptive exterior appearance

From the outside, this museum doesn't look like much (is that on purpose? Is it to create an illusion? Sorry, I had to make the joke).
The inside is relatively small, but there are still quite a few illusions and games to see or do. If you do everything (in some cases, you have to stare at pictures to see hidden drawings appear), it takes a good hour. You book your visit time in advance, and I imagine that is what helps keep it from getting too crowded.
Some perspectives are really surprising, and you can take photos (I am thinking in particular of the room where, depending on your position, you look much bigger or smaller). Some objects are too, like the arcs of a circle that are the same size... As for the vortex, a piece of advice: hold on tight to the railing ;)

Fun and educational

In a relatively small space (you really need to book your time slot, or you risk waiting at the entrance), you go through a series of "works" that will surprise you and amuse you, but also explain why our perceptions and our vision get tricked. I confirm, it is ideal to do with kids.

Great activity to do with kids

We were 2 adults and a 9-year-old girl visiting this museum. Usually, it is pretty complicated to find an outing that my daughter likes. In this case, she loved it and the adults did too. The museum is relatively small, we went through everything in 1 hour and 15 minutes. To avoid overcrowding, they may sometimes make visitors wait at the entrance. To avoid that, book your time slot in advance.
Different types of illusions to discover: shapes that look like they are different sizes, specific shapes, but actually are not. Rooms and furniture configurations that distort the perception of dimensions (cool photo to take where the children look like they are twice the height of the adults). And finally, rooms where the decor will make you lose your balance, even if the floor you are walking on is not moving!

Quick but fun

It is not a huge museum like the Louvre, and you can get through it in less than 2 hours. On the other hand, it is genuinely amusing and fun to let yourself be surprised by every illusion. I recommend it!

The whole family had a blast

I came here with my family, including kids ages 8 to 13, and both the kids and adults loved it. A quick tip: book your tickets in advance to save time at the entrance.
It is pretty small inside, but we liked almost everything. There are some really fun photos to take.
