Orcières Merlette

Where to stay near Orcières Merlette: the 3 areas to know in 2026

The upper Champsaur valley leads nowhere: the road climbs, serves the hamlets, reaches Orcières Merlette at 1,850 metres and stops there. No linked neighbouring resort, no second ski area one gondola away, no town at the end. Which, when choosing where to stay, makes the question far simpler and rather more serious at once.

Because only three levels remain on a single road: the resort, the village of Orcières five kilometres lower, and the valley below that. Every kilometre you come down has to be climbed again the next morning, with no way round. And one detail counts more here than elsewhere: our member, who has known both seasons, prefers the summer.

Orcières Merlette 1850 The resort, at 1,850 metres, at the end of the road

Whoever skis every morning, and families who want nothing to organise

The resort was built in one go on a south-facing shelf, looking at the Écrins massif, and its facilities match that position: you ski 100 kilometres of runs up to 2,725 metres, but you also find a swimming pool, a lake and plenty to occupy children who do not ski. It is the mountain club formula, carried by several large all-inclusive properties, and it fits exactly what the valley imposes: once you are up, you do not come down every evening. The drawback is known: the concrete of the building years, and snow-front rates.

The choice of activities is top notch and perfect for the whole family. The lake, pool, equestrian center, and endless hiking options make for a very varied mix.

Les Catrems & Le Montagnou Mid-range

Hôtel et Camping O2 Orcières Outdoor Area Mid-range

A hybrid formula, hotel and campsite, turned towards the outdoor activities our member mentions first. Well rated, and more flexible than a classic club.

Pros

  • The 100 kilometres of runs starting below the building
  • Pool, lake and activities for anyone not skiing
  • No journey, in a valley that does not forgive them

Cons

  • The concrete of resorts built in one go
  • Nothing costs more in the valley
2

The village and its hamlets Orcières at 1,400 metres, five kilometres lower

Anyone who prefers an inhabited village to a snow front

The commune is not just its resort: it gathers 22 hamlets between 1,170 and 3,117 metres, and the village of Orcières, at 1,400 metres, is its main settlement. You find there what the shelf above lacks: old houses, a bell tower, meadows and silence, five kilometres of road from the first lift. Places to stay are few and often small, so they need booking well ahead, but they rent for a fraction of the rate charged up top. In summer, when skiing no longer dictates, this level becomes the best of the three.

Pros

  • A real village, with 22 hamlets around it
  • A fraction of the rate charged at the snow front
  • The best compromise in summer

Cons

  • Five kilometres of road to climb every morning
  • Very few addresses, and they go months ahead
3

The Champsaur valley Saint-Jean, Chabottes and Ancelle, 7 to 13 kilometres away

Anyone coming for the valley as much as for the snow

Lower still, the valley widens and fills up: Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas 7.5 kilometres away, Saint-Léger-les-Mélèzes 9.8, Ancelle 11.1, Chabottes 13.2. These are communes living off farming as much as tourism, with guesthouses whose scores beat anything the resort offers. You gain a setting, a table and a budget; you lose proximity, since the climb has to be made again in full every morning. It is the choice of a stay where skiing does not fill every day.

Chambre d'Hôtes La Grange des Ecrins Mid-range

No address in the area scores higher: a guesthouse with an outdoor pool, facing the peaks. 13.2 kilometres from the resort, and in another world.

Les Primevères Mid-range

Pros

  • The best accommodation scores in the area
  • An inhabited valley, and not only in winter
  • Guesthouse rates, not resort rates

Cons

  • The full climb every skiing morning
  • Nothing to do on the spot when it snows

Our tips for booking the right place

  • At the end of a valley, every kilometre counts twice: There is no second resort within reach, no link by the lifts, no way round: the road up to Merlette is the only one, and it ends there. In other words, the five kilometres between the village and the resort, or the thirteen that separate it from Chabottes, have to be covered in full every morning and every evening. Over a week, the price gap from top to bottom therefore compares with about ten round trips, not with one journey.
  • A 100 kilometre ski area, with a national park behind it: The area peaks at 2,725 metres with 61 runs and 26 lifts, and it backs onto the Écrins National Park. That is a lot for a resort never named among the big ones, and it explains the family clientele: plenty of skiing, a bright south-facing slope, and prices below those of the Northern Alps. The counterpart is the absence of any link, which bounds the area to what it is.
  • Our member prefers the summer, and says why: He has known both seasons and picks the second: a lake, a pool, an equestrian centre, and above all the walk that leads from the Pic du Drouvet down to the Lac des Estaris, in high mountain country. It is a useful view because it shifts the accommodation question: in winter the snow front holds up; in summer the valley villages and the commune's 22 hamlets take the lead, and their guesthouses carry the best scores in the area.
Where not to stay near Orcières Merlette
  • Booking down in the valley while planning to ski every day: the full climb has to be made morning and evening, with no other road available.
  • Leaving the village of Orcières to the last minute: addresses there are few and small, and they go early.
  • Coming in search of a linked ski area: Orcières connects with no other resort, and the pass opens nothing else.

FAQ: where to stay near Orcières Merlette

Should you sleep at the resort or down below?
At the resort when skiing fills the days: the ski area starts below the building, and the valley offers no shortcut. Down below when the stay extends beyond skiing, or when the budget commands: the village of Orcières is five kilometres away, the Champsaur valley between seven and thirteen, and guesthouses there earn far better scores. Either way the road is the same, and it leads nowhere else.
Is the ski area big?
100 kilometres of runs, 61 pistes and 26 lifts over 607 hectares, from 1,850 to 2,725 metres: a genuine area, larger than the resort's reputation suggests. It is linked to no other, however, which bounds it: over a week you go round it, and the families who come back are looking for exactly that.
What do you do in summer?
Our member, who knows both seasons, prefers this one: a lake, a pool, an equestrian centre, and plenty of walking. He singles out the one leaving from the Pic du Drouvet and dropping to the Lac des Estaris, in high mountain country. The commune counts 22 hamlets between 1,170 and 3,117 metres, and the Écrins National Park begins just behind.
Does the resort suit children?
They are its primary audience, and the facilities show it: a pool, a lake, organised activities, and several large properties on a club formula where the week is paid as one. Our member points out that the choice of activities is aimed at the whole family. The other argument is the south-facing slope, which earns the resort a sunshine level children appreciate more than anyone.
Can you come without a car?
From the resort, yes: you move around on foot and the ski area starts at the snow front. From the village or the valley, no: the road up the Champsaur is the only access, and it is driven. That is the point to settle before booking down below, since nothing else will present itself once you are there.
Where do you sleep best?
The best scores in our whole survey are not at the snow front but down in the valley: a guesthouse in Chabottes, 13.2 kilometres away, then an address in Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas, 7.5. At the resort, the large properties hold solid scores across hundreds of stays, which is another kind of guarantee. Quality therefore does not decide: what decides is the programme of your days.
