Visiting Orcières Merlette, a family resort in the southern Alps
Located in the Massif des Écrins (Écrins mountain range), Orcières Merlette 1850 is a family-oriented ski resort that provides a high-altitude setting for winter sports and mountain recreation. With modern infrastructure and a laid-back atmosphere, it is a destination for travelers looking for a mix of activity and downtime.
Accessible and varied skiing
The ski area at Orcières Merlette covers over 100 km of slopes (about 62 miles) designed for every skill level. You will find trails ranging from gentle beginner runs to steep terrain for experienced skiers, all within a protected natural environment. The resort also features a snowpark, designated freeride zones, and a boardercross course for those looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush. Thanks to its high elevation and extensive snowmaking equipment, ski conditions remain consistent throughout the winter season.
Activities for the whole family
Orcières Merlette is known for its off-slope activities, which are well-suited for families. Beyond downhill skiing, you can use the ice rink, the swimming pool with slides, or head out for a dog sledding excursion. The leisure center, with its aquatic complex and modern facilities, offers a way to wind down after a day on the mountain. During the summer, the resort shifts focus to become a hub for hikers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts.
Lodging for every preference
Accommodations at the resort cover a wide range of styles to meet different needs. Whether you prefer a self-catering apartment in a residence, a full-service hotel, or an authentic chalet, the resort offers comfortable options. You can spend your time in a welcoming, relaxed environment right in the heart of the Alps.
Located on the southern slopes of the Ecrins massif, the resort is often sunny. I was lucky enough to discover it in both winter and summer, but my preference is for the summer. The choice of activities is top notch and perfect for the whole family. The lake, pool, equestrian center, and endless hiking options make for a very varied mix. I really love the hike starting from the Pic du Drouvet that leads to the Lac des Estaris, you are right in the high mountains.
