Visiting the Houses of Parliament

Editor's note, updated 10/07/2024

The Houses of Parliament, located in the heart of London, is among the most recognizable sites in the United Kingdom. If you are visiting London, this historic complex is a primary destination for understanding the country's political evolution and viewing its distinctive architecture.

A rich and fascinating history

The Houses of Parliament has served as the seat of the British government for centuries. The current structure dates primarily from the 19th century, having been rebuilt following a fire in 1834. However, the site has been a center for political activity since the Middle Ages. You can explore the origins of the English monarchy and modern democracy while touring this monument.

Big Ben, the symbol of London

When discussing the Houses of Parliament, it is impossible to overlook Big Ben. This famous clock tower, officially named the Elizabeth Tower, is easily one of the most photographed attractions in London. The sound of the clock striking, echoing across the city, has become an auditory signature of the British capital. While the interior of the tower is not open to the public, the view from the street level is well worth the time.

Guided tours and legislative chambers

For an immersive experience, you can book a guided tour of the interior. These tours allow you to see the two legislative chambers, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. You will learn about the British political system, observe the intricate decor of the rooms, and occasionally have the chance to watch a live parliamentary debate.

Super interesting tour

The guided tour of this palace is really super interesting and lasts about an hour and a half. I recommend booking in advance because spots go fast. You learn so much about the history of the building and tons of little anecdotes. The interior is decorated beautifully.

Westminster, the heart of British history

The Palace is the seat of Parliament, so expect a lot of history if you go for a guided tour. The place is absolutely magnificent and a must-see, preferably by booking in advance. But be careful, it is not possible every day, and I find the tour a little (or a lot) expensive (around €70, or about $76), like many things in the UK.

A fascinating guided tour

I booked a guided tour well in advance to discover this must-see landmark. I really enjoyed it. The setting is sumptuous and I learned a lot about the inner workings and history of the British Parliament. In about an hour and a half, I felt like I was getting a look behind the scenes of power. Unfortunately, it is forbidden to take photographs inside the chambers.

Interesting

Not the whole interior is open to the public, and you have to take a guided tour (at least, that is what I understood). You cannot just wander around as you please, but it is still very informative. I lucked out with a passionate guide who really knew how to share their love for history and the little stories that make up history.

Nice visit

I have stayed in London several times without knowing you can visit the Houses of Parliament. Actually, you can, and I recommend it :)
Not everything is open to the public, but you can still easily spend half a day there. If you can treat yourself to a guided tour (at the very least, get the audio guide!), go for it, because besides being impressive in its size and elegance, the palace is packed with historical information and anecdotes.
