Banff National Park (Alberta)

Where to stay near Banff National Park: the 3 areas to know in 2026

Elayne sums up what makes this park different from every other on these pages: « enough elevation gain to really tire you out, but the upside is that you can then relax in the outdoor thermal baths ». Those baths are 4.1 kilometres from the town of Banff and close at 10pm: the day can end in hot water, but only if the night is spent there. From Canmore it is 30.2 kilometres; from the Bow Valley Parkway, 51.6.

And for the rest, it is not the distance that decides, it is the reservation. The Moraine Lake road is closed to personal vehicles all year round: you only get there by shuttle, compulsorily booked, and the shuttles leave from the Lake Louise Park and Ride, 57.6 kilometres from Banff. Three areas share the nights: the town of Banff, Lake Louise with the Bow Valley Parkway, then Canmore, outside the park.

Banff, the town in the middle of the park 4.1 kilometres from the thermal baths, 7,502 inhabitants

Anyone who wants to end the day in hot water

Seven thousand five hundred and two inhabitants, an avenue of restaurants and shops, and a position nothing replaces: the thermal baths are 4.1 kilometres and eight minutes away, open until 10pm, and Lake Minnewanka 12.6 kilometres off. In exchange, Lake Louise is 61.7 kilometres and fifty-nine minutes away, and the Park and Ride for the Moraine Lake shuttles 57.6.

you can then relax in the outdoor thermal baths

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The Moraine Lake road is barred to cars, and that is settled in April: This is the fact that decides the day, and it appears on no map: the Moraine Lake road is closed to personal vehicles all year round. Only Parks Canada shuttles and licensed commercial operators drive it, from June to mid-October. A reservation is compulsory on all Parks Canada shuttles: for 2026, seats open on 15 April, 40 per cent go on the day itself, and the remaining 60 per cent are released two days before each departure, at 8am Mountain time. The 2026 season runs from 15 May to 12 October for the Lake Louise lakeshore and from 1 June to 12 October for Moraine Lake. Departures run from 6.30am to 5pm from the Park and Ride at the Lake Louise ski resort, where parking is free all day for anyone holding a reservation.
  • What the park and the shuttle cost, and what is free: Park entry costs $8.80* per adult aged 18 to 64, $7.70* per senior aged 65 and over, and $18* for a group of up to seven people in one vehicle. Anyone 17 and under enters free since 1 January 2018, but that waiver covers entry only: neither camping nor the hot springs. If the stay runs beyond a few days, the annual Discovery pass costs $60* per adult, $52* per senior and $120* per family. The shuttle itself costs $9.20* per adult, $4.30* per senior and $2.90* per youth, plus a reservation fee of $2.60* online or $4* by telephone, charged once per reservation. The Lake Connector shuttle, between the two lakes, asks for no reservation and runs from 7am to 6pm.
  • The thermal baths close at 10pm, and that is what changes the choice of a bed: « Enough elevation gain to really tire you out, but the upside is that you can then relax in the outdoor thermal baths », writes Elayne. The Banff Upper Hot Springs open every day from 10am to 10pm, with last entry at 9.30pm, and the water is kept between 37 and 40 degrees. At 1,585 metres, it is the highest operating hot spring in Canada. Single entry costs $15* per adult, $13* per senior and per youth aged 3 to 17, $47* for a family, locker token included, and a swimsuit rents for $3.60*. From the town of Banff there are 4.1 kilometres and eight minutes; from Canmore, 30.2 kilometres; from the Bow Valley Parkway, 51.6. That last column is what should decide, not the price of the room.
  • Why this page serves so few scores: Of the twelve listings read on the same day around this park, seven gave two different scores between two readings, from 0.2 to 0.3 apart: one place went from 8.6 to 8.4, another from 8.3 to 8.6, a third from 8.9 to 9.1. A counter that moves by 0.1 during the day is normal, it is a living average; beyond that, we serve nothing, because an unstable figure does not help anyone choose. The five addresses on this page are the ones whose two readings agree, and a thirteenth was set aside for another reason: thirteen reviews is too few for an average. The scores served here are therefore rare, and that is deliberate.
  • The evenings are cold, and a member says so before anyone else: « Remember to bring something warm to wear, the evenings get chilly », writes Capucine92, and nothing changes the contents of a suitcase more. The town of Banff sits in a high mountain valley, and the thermal baths, 4.1 kilometres away, stand at 1,585 metres. GlobeTrotter adds a warning of another kind, which bears on the choice of area: « for serious hikers, go without kids so you can walk, climb, and explore without holding back ». A walking stay sleeps near the trails, so at Lake Louise or on the Bow Valley Parkway; a stay with children finds tables, shops and pools in Banff and Canmore.
Where not to stay near Banff National Park
  • Planning to drive to Moraine Lake: the road is closed to personal vehicles all year round.
  • Waiting until June to book a shuttle: 40 per cent of the seats go on 15 April, and the rest two days before departure, at 8am.
  • Counting on the thermal baths after 9.30pm: that is the last entry.
  • Believing that sleeping in Canmore avoids the entry fee: the night is outside the park, every day inside it is paid for.

FAQ: where to stay near Banff National Park

Can you drive to Moraine Lake?
No, and that is the fact that organises the whole stay: the Moraine Lake road is closed to personal vehicles all year round. Parks Canada shuttles and licensed commercial operators drive it from June to mid-October, and a reservation is compulsory on the Parks Canada shuttles. They leave from the Park and Ride at the Lake Louise ski resort, from 6.30am to 5pm, and parking there is free all day for anyone holding a reservation. Sleeping at Lake Louise puts that departure within reach; sleeping in Banff adds 57.6 kilometres before the shuttle.
Should we sleep in Banff or at Lake Louise?
Both make sense, and the trade-off comes down to two figures. In Banff, the thermal baths are 4.1 kilometres away and close at 10pm, the restaurants are a walk away, and the town counts 7,502 inhabitants; but Lake Louise is 61.7 kilometres and fifty-nine minutes off. At Lake Louise, the lake is 4.1 kilometres from the village and the shuttles to both lakes leave from here; but the thermal baths are fifty-seven minutes away from our address on the Bow Valley Parkway, and the village counts only a thousand inhabitants.
How much does park entry cost?
$8.80* per adult aged 18 to 64, $7.70* per senior aged 65 and over, and $18* for a group of up to seven people in one vehicle. Anyone 17 and under enters free, but that waiver covers neither camping nor the hot springs. Beyond a few days, the annual Discovery pass costs $60* per adult, $52* per senior and $120* per family. The shuttles are paid on top: $9.20* per adult, $4.30* per senior, $2.90* per youth, and a reservation fee of $2.60* online.
Is sleeping in Canmore a good idea?
It is the choice of anyone who wants a real town: 13,992 inhabitants against 7,502 in Banff, tables that stay open and apartments with a kitchen. The night is spent outside the park, so without an entry fee, but every day inside the park is paid for as anywhere else. Count 26.2 kilometres and twenty-nine minutes to Banff, 30.2 kilometres to the thermal baths, and 84.1 kilometres and seventy-seven minutes to Lake Louise: it is the area furthest from the lakes on these pages.
Can we come without a car?
Partly. Roam Transit's route 8X, the Lake Louise Express, runs every day all year round from Banff, and a reservation is strongly recommended there in summer. From Lake Louise, the Parks Canada shuttles serve the Lake Louise lakeshore and Moraine Lake, and the Lake Connector shuttle links the two lakes from 7am to 6pm without a reservation. For the thermal baths, 4.1 kilometres separate the town from the building. A car-free stay is therefore slept in Banff, and the days are set by the timetables.
Why so few scores on this page?
Because seven listings out of twelve gave two different scores between two readings on the same day, from 0.2 to 0.3 apart. A counter that moves by 0.1 during the day is a living average and we then serve the lower one; beyond that, we serve nothing. A thirteenth listing was set aside for another reason: thirteen reviews do not make an average. The five addresses retained are the ones whose two readings agree, and their figures run from 8.3 to 9.0.
