Visiting the Anastasis Church
In terms of architecture, Santorini stands in a league of its own. Defined by curves and niches, the island defies classical standards to create a distinct signature style. Staying true to the Cyclades aesthetic, brilliant white buildings are accented with a blue as deep as the Aegean Sea. Religious sites follow this harmony, and with nearly 550 Orthodox and Christian churches, every village hides genuine gems. Imerovigli, famous for the Skaros rock, hides another splendor within its narrow alleys: the Anastasis Church, commonly referred to as Agios Anastasios.
A romantic and striking setting
Located 2 km from Fira, the capital, Imerovigli spreads its streets across the island's highest cliffs. The site is impressive, earning the nickname of the balcony of the Aegean Sea. Perched at an altitude of 330 m, it offers one of the most expansive views of the Caldera. Its charm is far from rugged despite the steep terrain, and like the local homes, the religious buildings are exceptional. The Anastasis Church, or Agios Anastasios, possesses all the ingredients of a legendary spot. Its azure blue dome topped with spikes and a white cross is nearly as recognizable as those of the three churches in Oia. The dazzling whiteness of its smooth walls contrasts with the sky, while an intricate bell tower with its own small blue cupola completes the composition, and a small plaza provides a place to enjoy the panorama.
Couples have made this one of their favorite places for weddings, as the setting is sumptuous, romantic, and striking due to its elevation. A pebble wall borders the structure, and it is a popular spot for travelers who enjoy capturing it from every angle, sometimes forgetting that it is, first and foremost, a place of worship.
I found everything I expected in Santorini. So, I wasn't disappointed, except for the number of tourists there. The blue dome of the church and its white walls are truly magnificent, facing the sea. The setting is superb, with little narrow streets. Whether you go in the morning, the afternoon, or during the sunset, you will fully enjoy it.
