Visiting Medvednica Nature Park, a nature escape near Zagreb
Hiking trails for all levels
Medvednica Nature Park, which encompasses the mountain range of the same name (meaning "bear mountain"), is located just outside Zagreb. It offers an extensive network of marked trails suitable for everyone from casual walkers to experienced trekkers. The routes wind through dense forests and provide sweeping views over Zagreb and the surrounding countryside. The Sljeme summit, which sits at 1033 meters (about 3389 feet), is a primary destination for hikers.
Veternica Cave: an underground exploration
Among the park's natural features, Veternica Cave stands out for its geological depth and historical significance. Accessible via guided tours, it contains impressive rock formations and evidence of prehistoric life. The cave is also known as a sanctuary for several species of bats.
Medvedgrad fortress: a look into the past
Perched on the mountain slopes, the Medvedgrad fortress serves as a reminder of the region's medieval era. The restored site provides direct views of Zagreb and the Pannonian plain. You can explore its ramparts, its chapel, and the Oltar domovine (Altar of the Homeland), which serves as a site for reflection and remembrance.
One of my best memories of Zagreb! I drove to the park, but it is also easy to get there by public transport from the city center. I spent a full day hiking the forest trails and heading up toward the Sljeme summit. I really felt like I was out in nature! The trail going up is pretty tough, but the view over the region is worth the climb. There are tons of walking and biking paths, so there is something for every skill level. Besides the scenery, you come across churches and mines along the way. I unfortunately didn't have time to see the bat caves. It is better to get there early in the morning and on a weekday to enjoy the peace and quiet.
