Visiting Vulcania
A volcano park, surrounded by volcanoes
The Vulcania park is a theme park located in the Massif Central, about 9 miles from Clermont-Ferrand, dedicated to volcanoes and their activity. It opened in 2002 and quickly gained an international reputation for its educational and high-tech attractions.
The park is situated in the heart of the Parc naturel régional des volcans d'Auvergne (Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park), within a landscape of mountains, lakes, and rock formations. It spans 140 acres and features indoor and outdoor exhibits, live shows, simulations, and interactive rides.
Key attractions
Among the park's main draws are the Volcan de Lemptégy, a volcanic eruption simulation that lets visitors feel the power and heat of a live eruption, and the Volcanoscope, a 360-degree theater showing films about volcanic history.
The park also hosts exhibits on the geological history of the region, how volcanoes form, and the lives of people in volcanic areas. Earthquake and landslide simulators are also available for visitors to test.
A park for all ages
The park operates from early spring through mid-autumn, with special events during holidays and weekends. Restaurants, gift shops, and other amenities are on-site, along with picnic areas for those who prefer to bring their own food.
Ultimately, Vulcania is an educational and entertaining park where you can explore the raw power of nature. With its interactive displays and innovative tech, it provides a memorable experience for all ages.

I have been passionate about volcanoes since I was a little girl, so I was curious to check out this park. Heads up, Vulcania is not focused on thrill rides. If you are looking to be scared, keep looking. To me, this park is a mix of the Cité des Sciences de la Villette and Futuroscope. It is perfect for introducing kids to science and raising awareness about our environment. I really liked the volcanic eruption experience and the Planetarium. During school breaks and weekends, there are plenty of activities and workshops for the little ones. I would recommend it less for adults on their own, unless you are really into volcanoes.
