Visiting Moinhos de Vento Park
Moinhos de Vento Park, or the Windmill Park, known to locals as Parcão or the big park, is an 11-hectare green space located in the heart of the upscale Moinhos de Vento neighborhood in Porto Alegre. Its name honors the city's history, shaped by early settlers from the Azores whose economic success relied heavily on the grain trade. The first windmills were built in this area on the property of pioneer Antônio Martins Barbosa.
A pleasant, quiet park in Porto Alegre
Opened to the public in 1972, the park features an artificial lake perfect for a walk with family or friends. You will find a windmill replica here that pays tribute to the grain-growing era in Porto Alegre. A large sculpture, the white castle monument, was erected in the park to honor Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco, a military leader who served as president of Brazil in the 1960s.
If you are visiting with family, stop by the library and the ecological center. These facilities are open to everyone and focus on teaching both children and adults about ecology and environmental conservation. For those looking to be active, the park offers more than just walking paths. You will find running and biking trails, as well as fitness equipment, tennis courts, and volleyball courts for your workout of choice.
An oasis in a high-end residential neighborhood
The Moinhos de Vento neighborhood surrounding the park is the most affluent area of Porto Alegre. You will find excellent bars and restaurants tucked away alongside elegant, historic homes in the immediate vicinity.
Nice park! Nice windmill! Great people watching, especially the old guys playing soccer!
