Mont Fort: reviews and practical tips

Téléphérique pour Mont Fort

The Rooftop of the 4 Vallées, Between Glaciers and the Matterhorn

Standing at an elevation of 3,328 meters (10,918 feet), Mont Fort commands the entire 4 Vallées ski area above Verbier. It marks the highest peak north of the Col de Louvie, a sentinel of rock and ice perched right on the edge of the Bagnes and Nendaz valleys.

A cross marks the summit, looking out over a landscape that gives away none of the cable car comfort that got you up there: hanging glaciers, razor-sharp ridges, and absolute high-altitude quiet.

Why Head Up Mont Fort

The peak has been accessible by cable car since 1987, turning a serious alpine climb into a straightforward day trip. Several glaciers fan out around it, including the Tortin Glacier on the northwest flank, which is the most expansive, and the Mont Fort Glacier on the northeast flank. A bit lower down sits the Petit Mont Fort (3,135 meters / 10,285 feet), separated from the main peak by its own glacier, while a small Petit Mont Fort lake nestles at 2,764 meters (9,068 feet) on the southern slope.

A Panorama Across the Entire Haute Route

From the top, the view sweeps across a massive stretch of the Valais Haute Route. To the west, you will spot the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc. To the south, the Grand Combin looms over the Val de Bagnes and the Mauvoisin dam. To the east, the Weisshorn, the Dent Blanche, and the Matterhorn come into view. Finally, looking north, the Rhône Valley stretches all the way to the Bernese Alps.

Summer and Winter, A Peak to Experience

In winter, Mont Fort delivers a steep, technical black diamond run reserved for expert skiers, dropping all the way down to the Col des Gentianes. Summer flips the script, drawing mountain bikers tackling the famous Tour du Mont-Fort loop, alongside hikers and travelers chasing sunrise breakfast views. A zipline launches right from the top station and flies over the Tortin Glacier. Yoga classes add an unexpected touch to the high-altitude lineup.

Near the arrival station, an igloo bar serves what is billed as Europe's highest fondue, a detail that captures the mix of alpine grit and social energy found up here.

Friendly tip: Sunrise trips to Mont Fort draw early birds, but there is no lodging at the summit, so you have to head back down the same day via the connecting ski lifts up from Verbier.

How long for this activity

Allow half a day for the round trip and taking in the views, or a full day if you plan to combine the ascent with a hike or activities at the summit.
