Courchevel Ski Resort

Where to stay near Courchevel: the 3 areas to know in 2026

Three of our members have written about Courchevel, and they agree on nothing. Two describe a resort where they did not belong, priced for an international crowd, to the point that one of them felt obliged to apologise for being ordinary. The third expected exactly that and experienced the opposite: ordinary prices, ordinary neighbours, no awkwardness at all.

The difference is not luck but an address. The name covers four villages staggered from 1,300 to 1,850 metres, all linked to the same slopes, and whose rates vary by a factor of two. The member who felt comfortable had slept in Moriond, in a residence whose review she wrote for us. That is the whole subject of this page.

The two ways to stay near Courchevel

The ski area is identical from all three bases, since the lifts link everything. What changes is the bill and the atmosphere.

What changes At 1850 Lower down: villages or valley
The price of a night Often above $570* in high season 30 to 50 % less, and far more than that in the valley
The morning The slopes start outside the door One more lift, or the shuttle
The atmosphere International, and our members are divided Ordinary, says the one who felt comfortable
Eating out The most renowned tables in the Alps Those of a Tarentaise village
The ski area The Trois Vallées, from the snow front The same Trois Vallées, after the lift
With a family Everything is there, at full price Apartments, and room to move
The setting A luxury resort, unapologetically An old village, a lake, shops
Who it suits A budget with no constraint The same skiing, for the price of another resort

How long to the entrance, area by area?

Distances start from the 1850 snow front; everything else in the commune is linked by the lifts.

Courchevel, at 1,850 metres The upper village, the one the reputation points to

Anyone for whom the budget is not the question

This is the village once called Courchevel 1850 and now simply Courchevel, the one with the palaces, the boutiques and the altiport. Two of our members describe it plainly: facilities and slopes kept in remarkable order, and accommodation whose rate often passes $570* a night in high season. One of them adds an impression rarely found in a travel review, that of not belonging. If the budget follows, the counterpart is real: the best of the resort, right at the slopes, with service that justifies its reputation.

It lives up to its reputation: an international crowd with money, houses, facilities, and shops that are kept in really, really good shape, and impeccable slopes.

Where to stay in this area

Le Strato Luxury

The highest score in our whole survey of the commune, for a house set at the foot of the slopes. The service is commented on before anything else, which is rare and says a great deal.

Hotel Annapurna Luxury

A family business at the highest point of the village, with a spa and direct access to the slopes. Its location score is among the best in our survey.

Pros

  • The slopes outside and the service of the grand houses
  • Facilities our members praise without reservation
  • The heart of the ski area, with no journey at all

Cons

  • Nights often above $570* in high season
  • An atmosphere two of our members found alienating
2

Moriond, Village and Le Praz The three other Courchevels, from 1,300 to 1,650 metres

Anyone who wants the same ski area without the bill from above

Below the upper village, three others carry the same name: Moriond at 1,650 metres, Village at 1,550 and Le Praz at 1,300. All are linked by the lifts to the complete ski area, so you ski exactly the same thing, and accommodation there costs 30 to 50 % less. That is precisely where our member stayed before writing that she had at no point felt out of place. Le Praz, down at the bottom, even keeps old houses and a lake, which the top does not have. The counterpart amounts to one more lift in the morning.

First off, I stayed at a Maeva residence: normal prices, even affordable, and a "normal" crowd. At no point did I feel like I didn't belong.

Hôtel Les Peupliers Mid-range

At Le Praz, the bottom village, and by far the most commented hotel of the lower levels. A village establishment, beside the lake, a few minutes from the lifts.

Résidence Pierre & Vacances le Moriond Mid-range

A classic Moriond residence, with a ski room, in the centre of the village. The kind of address that led our member to say prices there were normal.

Check availability

Pros

  • The same ski area, for 30 to 50 % less
  • A crowd our members describe as ordinary
  • At Le Praz, a real village with its lake

Cons

  • One more lift to reach the top
  • Fewer restaurants and shops than at 1850

The valley, below the resort Bozel, La Perrière and Brides-les-Bains, 3.6 to 6.5 kilometres away

Anyone who wants to sleep in a village that lives all year

Below the four Courchevels, the valley resumes its ordinary course: La Perrière 3.6 kilometres away, Bozel 4.7, Brides-les-Bains 6.5. These are Tarentaise communes, with their shops, their schools and their year-round inhabitants, where rates bear no relation to those of the ski area. Shuttles climb to the resort and plenty of travellers take them daily. What you lose is obvious: you have to climb every morning and come down every evening, which weighs on a week of hard skiing.

Everything is designed (and priced) for the international jet set. At times, I almost felt like I had to apologize for just being a normal person.

Where to stay in this area

Petit Chalet Vieux Bois Mid-range

In Bozel, a chalet whose score is among the highest in our survey, in a village travellers describe as lively. The resort shuttle passes through the village.

Check availability

Pros

  • Inhabited villages, with shops and schools
  • The lowest rates in the whole area
  • Daily shuttles up to the resort

Cons

  • The climb and the descent, every day
  • No snow at the foot of the building

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Four villages, one name, two worlds: The confusion is sustained by the name itself: Courchevel refers both to the whole commune and to its highest village, the one once called 1850. The other three, Moriond at 1,650 metres, Village at 1,550 and Le Praz at 1,300, are linked to the same ski area and cost 30 to 50 % less. Before giving up on Courchevel for budget reasons, then, check which of the four an offer refers to: that is the only piece of information separating an unaffordable week from an ordinary one.
  • What three contradictory reviews teach us: Two of our members found the resort closed, expensive and intimidating; one of them writes that she felt she had to apologise for being normal. The third, who feared exactly that, lived the opposite and describes it in detail: normal prices, a normal crowd, no awkwardness. She says where she was staying, and that is the key. The skiing is the same for everyone; the experience plays out at the level of an address.
  • The ski area does not depend on the level: The four villages are linked by the lifts to the Trois Vallées area, and the lower villages reach it by one more lift, not by a road. That changes everything compared with a dead-end resort: here, sleeping for less costs neither driving time nor dependence on a mountain-pass shuttle timetable. The price gap therefore turns into net gain over the week, which is rare elsewhere.
Where not to stay near Courchevel
  • Booking at 1850 out of brand reflex: three other villages carry the same name, ski the same area and cost 30 to 50 % less.
  • Sleeping in the valley for a week of hard skiing: the daily climb and descent soon weigh more than the money saved.
  • Judging the resort on its reputation alone: one of our members expected exactly that and found the opposite, one level down.

FAQ: where to stay near Courchevel

Is Courchevel really only for the rich?
The upper village, largely yes: a night there often passes $570* in high season and two of our members felt a real disconnect. But three other villages carry the same name, from 1,300 to 1,650 metres, with accommodation 30 to 50 % cheaper and the same access to the ski area. Our third member stayed there and at no point, she writes, felt that she did not belong.
What is the difference between the four villages?
Altitude and price, above all. Courchevel, at 1,850 metres, concentrates the palaces, the boutiques and the snow front. Moriond, at 1,650, is more family-oriented and holds the residences. Village, at 1,550, is the most discreet. Le Praz, at 1,300, has kept old houses and a lake. All are linked by the lifts, so the skiing stays identical whichever village you pick.
Can you ski the Trois Vallées from the lower villages?
Yes, entirely: all four villages are connected by lifts to the Trois Vallées area, and one extra machine from the bottom reaches the same summits. That is the major difference with valley-floor resorts, where sleeping cheaper means a road: here, the saving costs no driving time.
And sleeping below, in the valley?
That is the cheapest solution: La Perrière 3.6 kilometres away, Bozel 4.7, Brides-les-Bains 6.5, with daily shuttles up to the resort. Communes inhabited all year, with shops and schools. But the climb and the descent are repeated every day, which suits a mixed stay better than a week of hard skiing.
Where should a family stay?
In Moriond, according to our member: she stayed there in a residence, with children, and stresses normal prices and staff who were kind to families. Residences are plentiful there, apartments bigger than at 1850, and a kitchen avoids eating out every evening in one of the most expensive resorts in the Alps.
Is the resort's reputation deserved?
On quality, our members are unanimous: facilities, shops and slopes kept in remarkable order, and houses whose scores sit among the highest in our whole survey. On affordability they differ, and the altitude of the accommodation explains the gap. Both judgements are true, but they are not about the same village.
