Visiting Biogradska Gora National Park

Biogradska Gora National Park is a protected natural reserve in central Montenegro, framed by the Tara and Lim rivers along the Dinaric Alps. The landscape variety here draws travelers in with grassy meadows, a vast 16-square-kilometer virgin forest, and 5 glacial lakes tucked into mountains that reach 2,000 meters in elevation. The park has been part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves network since 1977.

Exploring pristine nature in the heart of Montenegro

Biogradska Gora National Park acts as a preserved cradle of biodiversity. Its flora is notable, with 220 plant varieties and 86 different tree species recorded. This primary forest features massive trees reaching 50 meters in height. Researchers estimate that some of these specimens are nearly 500 years old.

Wildlife enthusiasts will find plenty to observe, including nearly 200 bird species, 38 types of mammals, and 350 insect species.

Hiking the trails of Biogradska Gora National Park

Biogradska Gora National Park features numerous walking routes suited for every fitness level. The most accessible path circles the largest lake in the reserve, Biograd Lake: located at the entrance to the site, this loop spans just over 3 kilometers.

More ambitious hikers can attempt the ascent of Mount Bjelasica, the highest peak in the immediate area. The climb offers a sharp contrast in scenery, moving from the depths of the dense woods to exposed panoramas along the mountain ridgeline. During summer, the park supports water sports such as canyoning, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. In winter, two ski resorts open their lifts for the season.

A lake and some hikes

Biogradska Gora is a lake that will delight walkers, photographers, and amateur videographers. It is also the starting point for many hikes through this national park, which is magnificent in terms of both flora and fauna. This park shows Montenegro's commitment to preserving its geographical heritage.

You have to see it in winter with the first snows and in summer with the colors of a sunset. In mid-September, the water recedes and the lake loses a bit of its splendor. On the other hand, it is the perfect time to explore it without anyone else around.

Note: there is an entrance fee if you drive through the park, but for the motivated, a hike from Kolasin allows you to access it for free. That said, the entrance price is reasonable given the colossal amount of work done to maintain this National Park.

In short...
Whether you are a dreamer, a walker, a hiker, or something else... To me, it is a must-visit spot to understand the ecology and the richness of the Montenegrin landscapes.
