Where to stay near Halong Bay: the 4 areas to know in 2026
Around Ha Long Bay, the question is not the one the other places ask. The limestone pillars are out at sea, and from a room on the shore the window looks onto a channel, harbour cranes and a bridge deck, not onto the landscape of the photographs. What takes you into the bay is a boat, and that boat is a hotel too: a cabin, a dinner, a night at anchor between the rocks. So the accommodation is not what brings you closer to the place, it is the visit.
What remains is what to do with the other nights, and what you are willing to accept. Our members are harsh on one point: the bay is crowded, the boats follow one another, and the port they leave from is nothing but a transit zone. Sleeping aboard shifts your day away from the crowd's; sleeping at Cat Ba, on the other shore, gives you a quieter neighbouring bay; sleeping in Hanoi amounts to coming for the day. This guide sorts the accommodation into 4 areas, from the cabin at anchor to the capital.

The two ways to stay near Halong Bay
The divide is not between two distances, it is between water and land. A night aboard buys the two hours when the bay empties; a night ashore buys comfort, flexibility and a price.
| What changes | Aboard, in the bay | Ashore, from the shore to Hanoi |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | The pillars at sunset and daybreak, without the other boats | A channel from the shore, the pillars only on an excursion |
| What is included | Dinner, kayaking, caves and often a cooking class | The room, breakfast, and the rest to arrange |
| Comfort | A cabin: little space, and an engine you can hear | Real rooms, pools, proper bathrooms |
| The price | By far the most expensive area in this guide | From very cheap on Cat Ba to the comfort of Hanoi |
| Flexibility | A fixed timetable, and a boat not to be missed | You come and go when you like |
| Who it suits | One or two full days given to the bay | A stop on a tour, or a day excursion |
How long to the entrance, area by area?
The times below start from the jetty, and the boat weighs as much as the road: the island across the water is visible with the naked eye, but by tarmac you have to drive around the whole bay.
| From | Time | How |
|---|---|---|
| Aboard, the night at anchor | in the bay | from the quay Departure from the port during the day, return the next morning. |
| Bai Chay, the shore of the hotels | on the shore | on foot or by taxi Two boarding quays share the departures: check which one before choosing a hotel. |
| Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay | 45 min | ferry from Tuan Chau Between 45 minutes and 50 minutes of crossing, 5 to 7 a day, then 18 kilometres of road to the town. |
| Hanoi, where the trip begins | 2 hr 30 | motorway 150 to 170 kilometres depending on your starting point, and up to 3 hours with the stops. |

Aboard, the night at anchor In the bay itself, leaving the port during the day
Those who come for the bay and want to see it without the other boats
The boats of the bay are floating hotels: a wooden or steel hull, ten to forty cabins, an upper deck, dinner served on board and a night spent at anchor. You leave the port during the day and come back the next morning, which opens two windows closed to everyone else: late afternoon, once the day fleet has gone home, and dawn, before it returns. Kayaking, the caves and a cooking class are included in most programmes. It is the most expensive area in this guide, and the only one that really answers the question.
This is the one place you absolutely have to bring your camera to capture your visit :)
Where to stay in this area
Signature Royal Halong Cruise Luxury
Around forty passengers, cabins with balconies and an itinerary that keeps away from the busiest moorings. Reviews talk about the food and the cleanliness before they talk about the scenery, which says enough about the standard.
Bhaya Halong Cruises Mid-range
A fleet of wooden-hulled junks, in the tradition of the bay, with kayaking, caves, a cooking class and tai chi on deck at daybreak. What the reviews keep is mostly the crew.
Peony Cruises Budget
The most reviewed boat in the bay on our site, and the entry level for this area: plain cabins, a classic programme, efficient service. Reviews complain about plastic in the water, which is no fault of the crew.
Pros
- Evening and early morning in the bay, without the day boats
- Kayaking, caves and a cooking class included in the programme
- No road to drive: you sleep where you came to look
Cons
- The most expensive area, and one night aboard is rarely enough
- A cabin stays a cabin: little space, and the engine you can hear
Bai Chay, the shore of the hotels On the shore, within reach of the boarding quays
Those adding a night before or after the boat
This shore carries the town's hotel towers, its lorry-delivered sand, its cable car and its lit-up wheel. You spend the night before boarding here, to reach the quay without running, or the night after, so as not to set off on the road straight out of the boat. The mistake would be to expect the landscape: the rocks begin out at sea, and what the upper floors show is the harbour entrance. In exchange, this is the only place in the area where an evening holds together, with a lit seafront and kitchens open late. Our guide to the town goes district by district.
The port is huge and is a constant parade of boats. Tour operators and tourists are piled up at the marina reception. Watch out, it is not very well organized. Check the name of your boat beforehand so you do not get on the wrong ship, because the boardings happen one after another.

Wyndham Legend Halong Luxury
A tower on the edge of the channel, wide rooms and a morning buffet that almost every review mentions. What you catch sight of is the water and the structure spanning it, which is already better than the street.
Novotel Ha Long Bay Hotel Mid-range
Pool, gym and tidy rooms along the coastal boulevard. Reviews differ on the state of the building and agree on the staff, as well as on the panorama from the upper levels.

Where to stay in Halong
Halong has its own guide: neighbourhoods, prices, our recommended hotels.
Pros
- Within reach of the quays, for the eve or the morning after boarding
- A seafront promenade that comes alive at night, and late kitchens
- The most comfortable hotels in the area, pools included
Cons
- The pillars are out at sea: from here you see a channel and a bridge
- An ordinary seaside resort, which many travellers leave disappointed
Cat Ba and Lan Ha Bay The other shore, 45 minutes by ferry from Tuan Chau
Those who want the same rocks with fewer people, and some walking
Across the water the shore changes province: Cat Ba belongs to Haiphong. The island draws walkers and climbers, between a national park, a small fishing harbour and, further on, Lan Ha Bay, bristling with the same rocks but with a handful of craft instead of a fleet. The ferry timetable governs everything: the crossing from Tuan Chau takes between 45 minutes and 50 minutes, five to seven times a day, and then you have 18 kilometres of hairpins through the park. Anyone refusing the boat has to drive right around the water.
Where to stay in this area
Flamingo Resort Cat Ba Luxury
The island's only real resort, clinging above the water, pools and rooms turned towards the open sea. It is also the one address on Cat Ba whose rate catches up with those across the water.
Cat Ba Green Hotel Mid-range
A house on the quay, among the most reviewed on the island on our site, whose kitchen comes up in reviews as often as the rooms. From there, the jetties and the scooter hire are within walking distance.
Cat Ba Nam Phong Hotel Budget
A family-run house, whose welcome and value the reviews rate well above everything else. The comfort is plain, and nobody comes here for anything else.
Pros
- The same rocks with a fraction of the boats, on the Lan Ha side
- A national park, climbing cliffs and footpaths
- Rates far below those of the Ha Long shore
Cons
- A ferry then 18 kilometres of road, or the full loop around the bay
- Little in the way of high-end comfort, and a small town quiet at night
Hanoi, where the trip begins Two and a half hours away by road, the capital and its airport
Those coming to the bay for a day, or framing it with two nights in the city
Almost every stay in the bay starts in Hanoi: the plane lands there, and the boats' minibuses leave from there, for 150 to 170 kilometres and 2 hours 30 to 3 hours of motorway. Sleeping here brings you closer to nothing; it frames the trip: a night before, one after, the cabin in between. It is also the only city in the area that is visited for itself, with its old lanes, its lakes and its pavements where people eat. Our guide to the capital goes district by district.
Where to stay in this area
Apricot Hotel Luxury
Set between Hoan Kiem lake and the old lanes, walls covered in Vietnamese paintings, a terrace on top of the building. In the reviews the location comes before everything else, and it deserves to.
La Siesta Premium Hang Be Mid-range
In the heart of the old lanes, a roof terrace on the top floor and a breakfast the reviews rate very highly. Few addresses in the capital score better on our site, and none at this rate.

Where to stay in Hanoi
Hanoi has its own guide: neighbourhoods, prices, our recommended hotels.
Pros
- Where the flights land, and where the minibuses to the quays leave from
- A whole capital to visit before or after the bay
- More rooms and tables to compare than anywhere else in the area
Cons
- Reckon on 2 hours 30 to 3 hours by car before the first rock
- A day trip from here leaves very little time on the water
Our tips for booking the right place
- A night aboard does not buy a room, it buys two hours: What sets a night on the water apart from a day excursion is not the comfort: a cabin is small and the engine can be heard. It is the time slot. The day boats head back to port before evening and the water clears; at dawn it still is. Those of our members who rated the bay almost all mention the congestion: nothing else lets you avoid it.
- Check the name of your boat, and the quay: The port is vast and the boardings follow one another, several dozen boats with similar names. One traveller writes it here without mincing words: note down the exact name of yours before you arrive, or you will board the wrong one. Find out its quay as well: two jetties share the departures, in two separate spots on the shore, and that decides which hotel to pick for the night before.
- The other shore is not the same province: Cat Ba comes under Haiphong and not under the town of Ha Long, which has a very concrete consequence: by road you drive around the entire stretch of water. The Tuan Chau ferry takes between 45 minutes and 50 minutes, five to seven times a day, and there are then 18 kilometres through the national park. Anyone wanting both shores in a single stay builds the itinerary around that timetable, not around a distance.
- A single day from Hanoi hoping to see the bay: reckon on 2 hours 30 to 3 hours by car each way, and the time left on the water falls in the hours when the bay is busiest.
- A “bay view” room on the Ha Long shore: the window shows a channel, harbour cranes and a bridge deck; the rocks are out at sea.
- A Bai Chay hotel chosen without knowing which quay your boat leaves from: the two jetties are a long way apart.
