Ile aux Cerfs: Postcard-perfect or tourist trap?

The sand is a powdery white that clings to your ankles. The water, rarely deeper than a bathtub for dozens of yards, shifts between emerald green and electric blue.

The most visited site in Mauritius is also its most controversial. Some call it paradise, while others label it a tourist trap. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, and the secret to enjoying it depends entirely on how you get there and when you arrive.

Why visit Ile aux Cerfs?

This 215-acre private islet floats in the lagoon of Trou d'Eau Douce, on the east coast of Mauritius. It was named for the deer introduced in the 17th century for hunting. The deer are long gone, but the name stuck. In the 1970s, the Le Touessrok hotel turned the island into a beach destination. Development has been steady since, bringing beach bars, restaurants, water sports, and an 18-hole golf course designed by German champion Bernhard Langer.

The surrounding lagoon is one of the most beautiful in Mauritius. Protected by the coral reef, it offers calm, transparent water that is ideal for families with young children. At low tide, a sandbar emerges between Ile aux Cerfs and the smaller Ilot Mangénie, creating a fleeting path you can wade across with water at your waist.

What no one tells you before you go

The main beach on the north side is often crowded between 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM, when catamarans and speedboats drop off their passengers. The noise level rises, water sports vendors become persistent, and the postcard-perfect vibe fades a bit. We at Avygeo prefer to be honest: if you are looking for absolute quiet, other Mauritian beaches will suit you better.

On the other hand, the southern part of the island, near Plage des Flibustiers (Buccaneer Beach), remains much quieter. Coves follow one another along the east coast, and you can walk for a long time without crossing paths with many people. This is where the scenery regains its power: casuarina trees bent by cyclones, pristine sand, and crystal-clear water without the hum of boat engines.

Friendly tip: Arrive on the first shuttle around 8:30 AM. Bring a picnic you bought in Trou d'Eau Douce: samosas, chili cakes, and sandwiches. The restaurants on the island are expensive, and the picnic vibe under the casuarinas is much more pleasant.

Activities on the island and in the lagoon

The lagoon is a playground for water sports: parasailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Rates are negotiated on-site but remain high compared to the rest of Mauritius. Snorkeling in the immediate lagoon is decent without being exceptional, as the corals have suffered over the last few decades.

Speedboat excursions allow you to combine a visit to the island with a stop at the Cascade de la Grande Riviere Sud-Est (Southeast Great River Waterfall), which is only accessible by boat. This waterfall, which drops directly into the ocean, is worth the detour and adds real value to the trip. The barbecue lunch on Ilot Mangénie, often included in these packages, is a highlight.
