Visiting Xigia Beach
The main draw of Zakynthos is undoubtedly its coastline. Every cove sits in a postcard setting, and the clarity of the water is widely celebrated. It is rare to find spots that have stayed this well preserved despite their popularity. Among these, Xigia Beach stands out for its originality. The northernmost of its two coves features what many call miracle waters. The northeastern coast of the island continues to offer surprises.
Warm and healing waters
Locals often call this a natural spa, and it is true that Xigia Beach provides a unique service to its visitors. You will notice it the moment you arrive. The pungent smell of sulfur is not exactly pleasant, but its benefits are worth the minor inconvenience. Nearby caves house natural mineral springs that flow directly into the sea, infusing the water with its therapeutic properties and sulfur content. While the water remains as clear as anywhere else in Zakynthos, this chemical makeup gives it the healing reputation that drives its fame. Swimming here is like a wellness treatment for your body, as these minerals are known to help with rheumatism, arthritis, and general bone pain.
The setting is far more scenic than a typical bathhouse. You are surrounded by an exceptional landscape. Overlooked by the light-colored rock of tall cliffs, the bay is striking with its smooth white pebble shore. When the sun is high, the light reflecting off the water creates a brilliant atmosphere that contrasts with the turquoise sea. The site is equipped with umbrellas, lounge chairs, and a small snack bar for a comfortable afternoon. It is not the largest beach on the island, but it is certainly one of the most distinctive.
This tiny little cove is famous for one curiosity: cold, sulfuric(?) water springs that flow directly into the sea. They say these waters have healing properties for skin issues and rheumatism.
In my case, it didn't cure my back pain. It was crowded, the water was cold, and it smelled like rotten eggs. In short, a bit of a disappointment.
Remember to bring water shoes, the gravel is pretty sharp.
