Where to stay near Salar de Atacama: the 3 areas to know in 2026
The Salar de Atacama is a salt flat the size of a county, laid between volcanoes, and you do not sleep on it: it is a reserve, and the part you visit, the lagoon where the flamingos live, lies about 25 kilometres south of San Pedro de Atacama. That village of beaten earth, at 2,408 metres, is everyone's base, for the salt flat as much as for the geysers, the valleys and the high-altitude lagoons.
The question is therefore not how far away to sleep, since the answer is the same for everyone, but what the room includes. Around the village, isolated lodges sell an entire stay: meals, transfers, guides and excursions in the price. In the village, ordinary hotels sell a room, and the agencies on the main street sell the outings one by one. The gap in the bill is considerable, and so is the gap in organising. This guide sorts the places to stay into 3 areas, from the desert lodges to the airport town.

The two ways to stay near Salar de Atacama
Everyone visits the same places from the same village. What changes is what you buy along with the night.
| What changes | An all-inclusive lodge | A room in the village |
|---|---|---|
| What the rate covers | Meals, transfers, guides and excursions | The room, and nothing else |
| The programme | Already built, and designed for acclimatising | Put together in the evening for the next day, in the agencies |
| Meals | At the lodge's table, every day | The village restaurants, free and paid for |
| The budget | The highest in the region, everything included | From the guesthouse to the charming hotel, plus the outings |
| Without a car | Entirely provided for, transfers included | Workable: the agencies collect you from the hotel |
| Freedom | Low: the outings are the house's own | Total, including the freedom to do nothing |
| The evening | The silence of the desert | The village streets and their tables |
| Who it suits | Four or five days, arranging nothing | A free-form stay, or a budget to hold |
How long to the entrance, area by area?
The distances start from the village, since every excursion starts there too, the lodges' own included.
| From | Time | How |
|---|---|---|
| The desert lodges, all inclusive | a few km | the lodge's shuttle Transfers are included: no car to hire, no agency to deal with. |
| The village of San Pedro de Atacama | 25 km | excursion or car Distance to the flamingo lagoon, through which the salt flat is visited. |
| Calama, the airport town | 100 km | car or transfer An hour and a half of travel, to be done again the other way in the evening. |

The desert lodges, all inclusive Isolated in the neighbouring hamlets, excursions in the rate
Those who want everything arranged, guides and transfers included
A few kilometres from the village, in the irrigation hamlets along the river, three houses sell something other than a room: a whole stay, with meals, airport transfers, guides and daily outings carried in the rate. That explains both their prices, among the highest in Chile, and their scores, the highest on this page. The reviews talk about them less as hotels than as agencies with bedrooms: what comes back most often is the guides and the quality of the excursions, ahead of the bedding. For anyone coming four or five days without a car, the sum is not absurd, since every outing bought separately has to be paid for.
Where to stay in this area
Nayara Alto Atacama Luxury
A lodge set at the foot of an ochre cliff, with pools, an observatory and full board. The reviews insist on the guides and on the fact that the rate, excursions included, ends up holding together.
Explora en Atacama Luxury
The house of a Chilean name that sells programmes rather than nights: everything is in the rate, from the transfer to the guided outings. The reviews mention the choice of itineraries, built for acclimatising.
Tierra Atacama Luxury
A hotel of earth and wood open onto the Licancabur volcano, with a spa and a pool, and the same all-inclusive formula. It has fewer reviews than its neighbours, but no score below ten out of ten in our survey.
Pros
- Meals, transfers, guides and excursions in a single price
- Nothing to arrange: the outings are already scheduled
- The quiet of the desert, away from the village streets
Cons
- Rates with no equivalent anywhere in the desert
- No freedom over the programme, nor over the evening table
The village of San Pedro de Atacama The street of agencies, 25 kilometres from the flamingo lagoon
Those who pick their outings one by one, and their budget with them
A few streets of beaten earth, a square, a white church and a row of agencies selling the same outings at similar prices. Every room bracket is here, from guesthouses to charming hotels with patios, and the great majority of travellers sleep in them. One of our members sums it up bluntly: the village itself is of little interest and its prices are high, but the excursions leaving from it are many and varied. The advantage is freedom: you put your programme together in the evening for the next day, you pick your table, and each outing is paid for singly.
the excursions available from this town are numerous, varied, and incredible
Where to stay in this area
Hotel Terrantai Luxury
A stone house in the old centre, narrow and cool, the best rated in the village in our survey. You step out of it towards the agencies as readily as towards the evening tables.
Hotel Poblado Kimal Mid-range
A garden with a pool and private terraces, in the heart of the village, with hundreds of reviews whose score barely moves over the years. The most frequent compromise between comfort and position.
Hoteles Pueblo de Tierra Budget
The most commented address in the village's first price bracket, with an outdoor pool, and a score that this bracket rarely reaches. You put the budget into the excursions rather than into the room.
Pros
- The agencies on foot, and a programme built day by day
- Every room bracket, from the plain to the refined
- The evening restaurants, which the lodges do not replace
Cons
- Tourist-village prices, on everything
- Each excursion is paid for singly, transfers included
Calama, the airport town 100 kilometres from the village, and only for catching a plane
Those whose plane leaves too early to sleep in the village
Calama is a mining town nobody visits, but it is through its airport that almost every desert visitor arrives, and 100 kilometres of road separate it from the village, about an hour and a half. Only one reason justifies sleeping there: a flight at the crack of dawn, or a night-time arrival that rules out the transfer. Rooms here are negotiated far from San Pedro prices, and they are aimed mainly at mining engineers, which shows in the reviews. In other words: a stopover, not a base.

Park Hotel Calama Mid-range
No address in town is better rated with us, with spacious rooms and a breakfast often mentioned in the reviews. The one to remember if the stopover is forced on you.
Hotel Diego de Almagro Calama Express Budget
Ten minutes by car from the airport, without claiming anything else: sleeping near the runway before a morning flight. The reviews follow suit, decent and without enthusiasm.
Pros
- The runway ten minutes away, when the flight leaves at dawn
- Prices beyond comparison with those of the village
- A real town, open all year round
Cons
- The desert an hour and a half away by car, morning and evening
- Nothing to see on the spot: you pass through, you do not stay
Our tips for booking the right place
- The altitude sets the order of the days: The village is at 2,408 metres, the salt flat at roughly the same level, but the geysers climb to 4,320 metres and the high lagoons hardly less. One of our members recommends a few days on the spot before tackling the most strenuous outings, and that is the right order: the salt flat and the valleys first, the heights afterwards. The lodges build their programmes that way; arranging it yourself, this is decided when booking the outings, not on arrival.
- The salt flat is visited through a lagoon, not an expanse: People speak of the salt flat as a desert of salt, but what you visit is precise: a lagoon edged with cracked crust, about 25 kilometres south of the village, where the flamingos live, with the volcanoes behind. Entry is paid for, around $14* for a foreign visitor, and the light at the end of the day is the one our members describe. An excursion generally gives it half a day, often combined with the high-altitude lagoons.
- Compare the lodge with the total of the excursions, not with a room rate: That is this desert's particular trade-off. An all-inclusive lodge charges several times the price of a village hotel for one night; but it includes the meals, the airport transfers and two guided outings a day, which otherwise are bought singly in the agencies. Over four or five days and without a hire car, the gap narrows. Over two nights, or for anyone wanting a day doing nothing, it never narrows at all.
- Scheduling the geysers at 4,320 metres the day after arriving: acclimatising happens in the village, not up high.
- Sleeping in Calama to save money: the road, in each direction, eats the day and the saving.
- Booking an all-inclusive lodge for two nights: the formula only becomes interesting from four or five days.
