Where to stay near Carrières de Lumières: the 2 areas to know in 2026
Two exhibitions run here, and not on the same days: « Océan » on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Matisse and Frida Kahlo on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. The day of your stay therefore decides what you will see. Second thing to know before booking: the last admission is one hour before closing, and closing falls at 6pm from November to March.
All seven of our members give the length. MathildeFlor counts « a little over an hour », Laure D « about an hour » while pointing out that « you can stay as long as you want to watch them again », and Ariane planned « to stay for about an hour » and stayed longer. The quarries are in the Val d'Enfer, 211 metres from the closest hotel and 553 metres from the castle.

The Val d'Enfer, at the foot of the quarries The only two addresses under a kilometre away
Anyone who wants to walk there, and walk back
The quarries open into the white limestone valley that runs along the rock face on its northern side, and Laure D writes that « The natural site of the Val d'Enfer in the heart of the Alpilles has a lot to do with it ». Two addresses are within walking distance: 211 and 491 metres as the crow flies, 650 and 910 metres by road, while the castle itself is 553 metres away. That is all this commune offers at that distance: it has only six hotels in total, and the next one is already 2.62 kilometres away by road.
The natural site of the Val d'Enfer in the heart of the Alpilles has a lot to do with it.
Where to stay in this area
Le Mas d'Aigret city.oudormir_tier_haut
9.0 across more than 268 reviews, location 9.8 and staff 9.5, the two highest scores in this guide: 491 metres from the quarries as the crow flies, 910 metres by road, and 272 metres from the castle.
Baumanière Les Baux de Provence city.oudormir_tier_haut
The closest address to the quarries: 211 metres as the crow flies, 650 metres by road, two minutes by car. It is also the estate of L'Oustau de Baumanière, three MICHELIN stars in the 2026 France guide.
Pros
- 211 metres, and nothing closer
- The castle 553 metres from the quarries
- A three MICHELIN star table in the same valley
Cons
- Two addresses, at the rock's prices
- The third one is already 2.62 kilometres out
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, on the far side of the Alpilles A small town of 10,562 inhabitants
Anyone who wants choice, and a town alive in the evening
Saint-Rémy is 9.3 kilometres from the quarries by road, thirteen minutes, for 5.1 kilometres as the crow flies: the hills account for the difference. The town has 10,562 inhabitants where Les Baux has 264: this is where the choice of rooms exists, and where you find a table after a late afternoon screening. Two nights here also let you see both exhibitions, since they do not run on the same days. What this area costs is one round trip by car per admission.
An experience to do at least once (and maybe more, because the program changes!).

Our tips for booking the right place
- The exhibition depends on the day of the week, not on the season: « Océan » runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Matisse and Frida Kahlo run on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, and are programmed from 9 October 2026. In other words, the day you book decides what you will see, and a single night gives access to only one of the two bills. FloraC understood it her own way: « An experience to do at least once (and maybe more, because the program changes!) ». For anyone sleeping on the spot, seeing both means twice 650 metres; from Saint-Rémy, twice thirteen minutes of road.
- Last admission is one hour before closing, and closing shifts every month: In January, November and December, the quarries are open from 10am to 6pm. In February and March, from 9.30am to 6pm. From April to June then in September and October, from 9.30am to 7pm. In July and August, from 9am to 7.30pm. In every case the last admission is one hour before closing, and that is the figure that counts: our members talk about an hour of projection at the very least, so arriving at the last admission means seeing the show once, without watching it again. The site is open every day, public holidays included, with reduced hours of 11am to 6pm on 25 December and 1 January.
- What our seven members say about the length: They agree, and that is rare. MathildeFlor: « It lasts a little over an hour, and you do not even notice the time passing ». Laure D: « Regardless of the two projections that play one after another for about an hour (knowing that you can stay as long as you want to watch them again), the show is incredible ». Ariane: « I planned to stay for about an hour, but I got caught up in the game of discovering new details while wandering around during the show ». The ticket is not time-limited, so the real question is the hour you arrive, not the length. JeromeA adds that « At the end of the visit, you can sit down at a cafe and do some shopping at the gift shop ».
- Avoid dark clothes, and that advice comes from our members: Laure D puts it in one line: « A quick tip: avoid dark colors, otherwise you might walk out looking a bit dusty ». The reason lies in the place itself, and JeromeA describes it: « Here, the paintings are projected onto huge limestone blocks made of white stone ». Limestone leaves a pale dust, and those walls are the screen. No ticket office writes this down, and only a room 650 metres away makes up for it: you change before dinner.
- What admission costs, and who does not pay: Full admission is $19*. Over-65s pay $18*, students, 18 to 25-year-olds and jobseekers $16*, and 7 to 17-year-olds $15*. A family rate exists, two adults and two young people for $52*, and admission is free for under-7s. A Baux-de-Provence pass covers the quarries and the castle for $24* at full rate, which is $5.10* more than the quarries alone, and $65* for two adults and two young people. ValNomad, who gives 4 out of 5 where the other six give 5, raises the only reservation in our reviews: « The only downside is that the price is a bit high, but the experience is worth the trip regardless ».
- Arriving less than an hour before closing: last admission is one hour before, and the projection lasts an hour.
- Counting on seeing « Océan » on a Sunday: it runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Coming dressed in black: the hall is white limestone, and Laure D warns that you walk out « a bit dusty ».
- Assuming you can walk from a mas in the valley: the commune's third address is already 2.62 kilometres away by road.
