Where to stay near Jasper National Park: the 5 areas to know in 2026
Emilee puts it in one sentence: « Less known, less crowded, but twice as big as the neighboring Banff park, Jasper National Park doesn't have much to envy it for. » The official areas are 11,228 square kilometres here against 6,641 at Banff. But the question of where to sleep is not settled by space: it is settled by what is open. The fire of 24 July 2024 destroyed 358 of the municipality's 1,113 buildings and some 800 homes, and two years on the capacity is still below what it was.
Hence an unusual order: look at the calendar before the map. The park's bungalows close in winter, the lodge at Sunwapta Falls only opens from 14 May to 5 October, Maligne Canyon stays closed for 2026 and Miette Hot Springs until spring 2027. Five areas share the nights: the townsite, 1.5 kilometres away, the Athabasca bungalows at 4.9, Lac Beauvert at 9.7, Sunwapta Falls at 54.1, then Hinton at 78.9, outside the park.

The two ways to stay near Jasper National Park

Jasper, the townsite 3,948 inhabitants, and the station of the Canadian
Anyone who wants tables, shops and the train
Three thousand nine hundred and forty-eight inhabitants, and the only town in the park: grocers, restaurants, rental outfits, and a station where the Vancouver to Toronto train stops twice a week. It is also the neighbourhood that burned: 358 buildings out of 1,113 were destroyed on 24 July 2024, and the rebuilding still shows. The addresses that held on score 8.1 to 8.5, and Maligne Lake is still 48.3 kilometres and sixty-four minutes away, Athabasca Falls 32.
Beautiful hikes in the mountains, lakes and waterfalls, incredible landscapes

Our tips for booking the right place
- A third of the townsite burned in 2024, and it still shows in availability: This is the fact that organises this page. On 24 July 2024, the fire destroyed 358 of the municipality's 1,113 buildings, about 32 per cent, and with them some 800 homes; insured damage is estimated at 1.23 billion dollars. Two years later, more than 25 hotels and lodges are taking bookings and the roads are open, but the capacity is still below what it was before the fire, and temporary housing for residents is funded until 2028. The practical consequence: a room inside the park is taken far earlier than elsewhere, and a stay set on school holidays has every interest in looking at Hinton alongside.
- Maligne Canyon is closed, Cavell Road too, and Miette Hot Springs waits for 2027: Three sites that appear in every itinerary cannot be reached. Maligne Canyon stays closed for the 2026 season: the slopes have lost their vegetation and the risk of debris flows must be assessed before any rehabilitation. Cavell Road, which leads to Mount Edith Cavell, stays closed for 2026; drainage and paving are planned for summer 2026, slope stabilisation from autumn 2026 to spring 2027, and no reopening date is announced. Miette Hot Springs, 61.8 kilometres from the townsite, are closed for the season and will reopen in spring 2027. What remains, and holds: Maligne Lake, Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls, the Icefields Parkway.
- What the entry costs, and why it weighs on the choice of area: Entry costs $8.80* per adult, $7.70* per senior, and $18* for a group in a vehicle; youth enter free. Beyond a few days, the annual Discovery pass is worth $60* per adult, $52* per senior and $120* per family, and it also opens Banff, Yoho and Kootenay. These are, to the cent, the same amounts as at Banff: the fee is common to the country's national parks. The calculation that matters lies elsewhere: sleeping at Hinton means crossing the gate every morning, so paying for every day of visit, where a night inside the park adds nothing to the entry.
- The Icefields Parkway, and what a night to the south buys: « I recommend the Icefields Parkway, it is simply beautiful (make sure to bring something to stay warm for the cold) », writes Emilee. That road leaves the townsite southwards and reaches the Columbia Icefield in 106.2 kilometres and 111 minutes. From Sunwapta Falls, halfway along, there are only 52 kilometres and sixty-three minutes left, and Athabasca Falls drop to twenty-three minutes. A night down there turns a day behind the wheel into a quiet morning. The price of that gain: Maligne Lake goes back to 103 kilometres and 113 minutes, and the lodge only opens from 14 May to 5 October.
- The sky, the elk and the cold: three things our members put in the suitcase: « Bonus, which I didn't have the luck to see for myself: the Northern Lights. Apparently, you can see them! », writes Emilee. The park has been a dark-sky preserve since 2011, designated by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and it is the second largest site of its kind in the country: the dark night is part of what brings people here, and it is better watched outside the townsite. neopan adds what you cross on the way, « We also spotted elk and sometimes bears », and Emilee notes that « outside of the summer season, the human presence remains low ». As for the cold, the instruction fits in a few words in the review: bring something to stay warm.
- Planning Maligne Canyon: it stays closed for the 2026 season.
- Counting on Miette Hot Springs: they will only reopen in spring 2027.
- Booking a cabin inside the park for November or March: they close from November to March.
- Believing that sleeping at Hinton avoids the entry fee: the night is outside the park, every day of visit is paid for.
