Visiting Centenary Park
In 1908, the city council of Buenos Aires laid the groundwork for this massive park that covers a significant portion of the Argentine capital. Everything began with the purchase of a 10-hectare plot from a local brickmaker named Parmenio Piñero to establish a park on the western edge of Buenos Aires as it existed at the time. This major project was entrusted to the city's park administrator, a French-Argentine urban planner named Charles Thays. He worked tirelessly to complete the project just in time for the celebration of the revolution's centenary in May 1910. This namesake event gave the park its current name, Centenary Park.
Luxury, calm, and pleasure
Today, it is a pleasure to walk through this peaceful retreat that brings a genuine sense of ease to the city. Among the curiosities the park offers, observant visitors appreciate the meteorological indicator. This centenary monument sits in the central area of the Botanist. It is a remarkable piece, as it was gifted to the Argentine government by the Hungarian community on May 25, 1910. This indicator included the most advanced technology of the time for measuring weather and time. On its facades, above the names of 8 major world capitals, are eight clocks showing the time in each of those cities. Another essential element of the park, the Amphitheatre Parque Centenario (Centenary Park Amphitheater), regularly hosts musical and artistic cultural performances. On weekends, it is common for locals and visitors alike to spend time enjoying shows in a setting that is worth the trip all on its own.
Nice little park with its fountains and ducks. Ideal for seeing something other than buildings and streets crowded with cars. I spend a lot of time there since I live two blocks away. It is really pleasant for the portenos. The fact that it is located in the geographical center of the city limits the number of people. The geographical center of Buenos Aires is far from being the most attractive area in general. On Sundays, the feria del parque is held. It is a sort of big flea market or fair where you can find everything, even food. Lots of playgrounds for families and children, and benches to share a mate with your sweetheart or friends.
