Visiting the Canadian side of Niagara Falls

The most famous waterfalls in the world

Straddling the border between the United States and Canada at the convergence of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, Niagara Falls draws over 10 million visitors annually. This massive complex consists of three distinct falls, the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, the American American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls, which remain among the most recognizable natural wonders on the planet. As one of the most photographed sites in the world, the volume of water moving through here is staggering, equivalent to filling a million bathtubs every second. Local legend suggests that Jerome Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon, ignited the trend of honeymooning here back in the early 19th century.

While they are not particularly tall, the falls are incredibly wide and possess a powerful flow, serving as a vital source of hydroelectric power. The Canadian side is managed by the Niagara Parks Commission, which oversees a wide range of attractions.

How to see them

With a standard pass, you get access to the observation deck in the heart of Horseshoe, a boat excursion, a 4D theater experience detailing the history of the falls, a guided tour of the Niagara Gorge, and two days of free travel on the WEGO bus system. The upgraded pass adds entry to the 1916 Whirlpool Aero Car, the botanical garden known for its orchids, the butterfly conservatory, and four historic sites: Old Fort Erie, Laura Secord Homestead, McFarland House, and Mackenzie Printery. Another solid viewpoint is from the Skylon tower. If your schedule allows, check out the Niagara Falls History Museum.

Throughout the year, the Fallsview Casino organizes sound and light pyrotechnic displays. You can also book evening excursions at 9:30 PM as part of the night lights program to experience the falls with a more romantic or mysterious atmosphere.

A real theme park

On the Canadian side, Niagara Falls is impressive. You can admire it from different spots. For example, you can take a boat that brings you to the base of the falls or see them from a panoramic view at the top of the Skylon Tower. I was a little disappointed by the environment around the falls, which really makes you think of a theme park town with its casino and tourist activities.

Mini amusement park

Niagara Falls on the Canadian side is truly impressive and worth spending a full day there. Take the time to go explore the surrounding streets. Even though it is a tourist trap, some spots and the storefronts are worth the trip.

Impressive falls

You can easily spend a day walking around the falls to take advantage of the many viewpoints.

Like Micka, I think the town around it has nothing authentic about it.
