Visiting the Mummy Museum of Guanajuato
Located in the historic city of Guanajuato, the Mummy Museum of Guanajuato draws travelers looking for an experience far from the ordinary. It houses a unique collection of naturally preserved mummies, exhumed from the local cemetery over the last century.
A one-of-a-kind collection
The museum displays more than 100 mummies, with some dating back to the 19th century. Unlike the artificial mummification techniques of ancient civilizations, these bodies were preserved naturally due to the specific conditions of the soil and climate. Among the most notable specimens are the world's smallest mummy, a mummified fetus, and several bodies that still retain their original clothing.
A fascinating and somber atmosphere
The exhibit is designed to encourage reflection on death and Mexican funerary rites. The arrangement of the bodies, occasionally accompanied by informational placards detailing their histories, reinforces the educational and unconventional nature of the museum. The dim lighting and narrow corridors create an environment that may be intense for sensitive visitors.
A connection to Mexican culture
The museum is part of a broader tradition surrounding the cult of the dead in Mexico. It is often associated with the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) on November 1st, an iconic celebration in the country. Certain mummies have even inspired works of fiction, which has only added to the mysterious and legendary status of the site.

As Europeans, the Mummy Museum, even though it is one of the main attractions in Guanajuato, can be shocking, especially for children. But Mexican kids love it because the mummies have become famous cartoon characters!
Avoid going during peak tourist season. You sometimes have to wait in a very long line under the sun before you can buy your ticket, and then you walk through the narrow, dark hallways of the museum in a crowd of onlookers taking photos of themselves in front of the mummies. It is very special.
