Sacro Monte di Varese: More than a pilgrimage, an artistic climb

A designated UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sacro Monte di Varese is not just a destination to see, but one to experience. This journey begins at the base of the hill and concludes two kilometers (1.2 miles) later in a medieval village suspended in time, set against a backdrop of lakes and the Prealps.

Why is this ascent so unique?

Beyond its spiritual significance, the Sacro Monte di Varese serves as a masterpiece of the 17th-century Counter-Reformation. It was designed to offer pilgrims an immersive experience through the Mysteries of the Rosary, turning a standard hike into an open-air theatrical narrative. The stylistic consistency of its Baroque design, credited to the architect Giuseppe Bernascone, provides a rare and powerful harmony where every element, from the chapels to the fountains, functions as part of a single unified work.

One path, fourteen chapels, a world of sensations

Climbing the Sacred Way is a sensory experience. The cobblestone path, which winds for 2 km through the Parc régional Campo dei Fiori (Campo dei Fiori Regional Park), sets its own pace. The physical exertion prepares both the soul and the body for contemplation.

Life-size scenes

Each chapel acts as a window into a moment from the life of Christ. Inside, groups of life-size painted terracotta statues paired with vivid frescoes create scenes of striking realism. The interaction between the figures, the texture of the drapery, and the intentional light filtering through the openings are all crafted to provoke an emotional response.

Renowned Lombard artists such as Morazzone and Francesco Silva left their mark here, lending a particularly intense expressiveness to the characters.

The summit: a timeless village with commanding views

Reaching the village of Santa Maria del Monte is the ultimate reward. After passing the final archway, the path opens into a medieval hamlet filled with stone houses and covered alleys. The quiet here, broken only by the wind in the trees, stands in sharp contrast to the activity of the city below.

Treasures of the sanctuary and museums

The route culminates at the fifteenth station: the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, which predates the construction of the Sacred Way itself. Make sure to visit:

  • The Romanesque crypt, a precious remnant of the original church.
  • The Museo Baroffio, which holds a collection of both sacred and contemporary art.
  • The Maison-Musée Lodovico Pogliaghi, the eclectic home of the artist who dedicated his life to the Sacro Monte di Varese.

Pro tip: For a complete experience, take the historic funicular for the descent. You will save your legs from the return trek while enjoying a bird's-eye view of the path you just climbed and the Lombardy plains. It is the best way to grasp the impressive topography of the site.

A must-do

Sacro Monte del Rosario is a path about 2 km long that you can walk freely. It is lined with fourteen small, typical chapels that you can visit along the way. At the end of the route, you arrive at the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte. The path is accessible to everyone, even if you are not very athletic. I have very fond memories of it.
