Visiting Mottarone
When a region is as vast and beautiful as Piedmont, finding a vantage point to take it all in is a priority. While you cannot quite reach the clouds, Mottarone and its 1,491-meter peak provide one of the most expansive views in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province. Situated between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, these two shimmering mirrors reflect the Alps. It is a panorama so significant that the ascent has become a classic excursion in northern Italy, especially for those staying in Stresa.
Views of seven lakes and the alpine range
Mottarone is a natural highlight. Regarded as one of the finest balconies in the region, its 360-degree view over the Po Valley draws athletes and vacationers year-round. While the mountain is imposing, its relatively gentle contours make the climb accessible. Halfway up at an altitude of 800 meters, the Alpino area features a botanical garden showcasing 700 alpine species. Spanning 4 hectares of woodlands and floral displays, including the rare Gentian, the site is well maintained. The real spectacle, however, is higher up at the summit of Mottarone, where the entire mountain range stretches out toward the horizon. From the massive Monte Rosa massif to the seven lakes in the valley, the view is expansive. You can clearly see the 65 km length of Lake Maggiore, where the blue water cuts through the surrounding rock and greenery. High-altitude restaurants serve visitors, while hiking and mountain biking trails crisscross the slopes. In the winter, the ski resort offers runs within this environment. Mottarone is a peak defined by its perspective.
A summit reaching 1,500 meters in altitude, you can get there on foot or via a cable car (for a fee).
If you have the time and you are in good shape, I recommend making the climb on foot. The nature in this region is splendid. Your reward once you reach the top: magnificent views of Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, and the entire surrounding area.
