An Ardennes fortress perched on its rocky spur
Ramparts, artillery towers, and consolidated ruins stretch across a rocky spur rising some 150 metres above the Sûre river. Most of the walk takes place in the open air, amid stones that time has not entirely spared.
The castle dominates the valley in the Luxembourg Ardennes, on the heights of the village of Bourscheid.
Why visit Bourscheid Castle
It is the largest medieval fortress in Luxembourg, and one of the most significant between the Rhine and the Meuse rivers. The site bears traces of occupation dating back to Roman times.
The fortress was expanded in four stages and completed in 1430, featuring a massive fortified complex and numerous artillery towers. It was home to the lords of Bourscheid, one of the region's most influential knightly families who served as vassals and advisors to the Duke of Luxembourg.
In 1626, the Metternich family succeeded the Bourscheids. The ruins were classified as a historic monument in 1936, and acquired by the state in 1972.
Ramparts, terrace, and outer fortifications
You can explore the ramparts, towers, and living quarters with an audio guide available in several languages, including a version for children. From the ramparts, the view opens up over the Sûre valley.
A walking trail also loops around the outer fortifications. A panoramic terrace offers drinks and snacks, and a souvenir shop rounds out the visit.
Guided tours by reservation bring the character of Els to life and focus on local plant life.
The Stolzembourg House
Next to the castle stands the maison de Stolzembourg, a Gothic manor dating from 1348, which has since been rebuilt.
Friendly tip: the site is open every day of the year, but hours change between summer and winter, with significantly shorter hours from mid-October to late March. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and the LuxembourgPass is accepted at the entrance.

Perched on top of a hill, Bourscheid Castle impressed me with its layout and architecture. It is the largest one in Luxembourg! Built in four stages, it features a huge perimeter wall and pretty turrets, from which you get a splendid panorama of the valley. The visit is not expensive, and for two euros more, I suggest you get the audio guide, available directly on your phone. Without it, the tour lacks explanations. If you like castles, I also recommend that you see the one in Vianden, not very far away by car.
