Visiting Göreme National Park

In the heart of Cappadocia, within the Nevsehir district, Göreme National Park is one of the most striking sites you will ever encounter. Spanning ten hectares, it feels like an entirely different world, defined by both its historical significance and its raw, rugged beauty. Fifteen centuries ago, humans carved homes, entire villages, and churches directly into this landscape. Today, the area is rightfully designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A lunar volcanic landscape

Nature transformed the aftermath of three volcanic eruptions into a work of art. Thirty million years ago, volcanic activity blanketed the valley, and over time, that ash hardened into tuff. Erosion eventually sculpted the terrain, creating ridges, columns known as fairy chimneys, and jagged peaks. Because the rock is relatively soft, early inhabitants found it ideal for carving out dwellings. Facing this terrain, often described as lunar, your first reaction at Göreme National Park will be one of pure awe. The 4th-century cave dwellings are remarkable. As you move through the valley, you discover what are essentially entire subterranean cities, where gallery entrances dot the mountainside.

A unique record of rock-cut architecture

Following this tradition of using the landscape for shelter, monks occupied these caves to establish churches between the 10th and 13th centuries. These rock-cut sanctuaries form the Open Air Museum, a site of immense artistic value where frescoes and paintings remain remarkably well-preserved. With its vaulted ceilings and stone pillars, the Dark Church stands out as one of the most incredible examples. Its interior lack of light kept the original pigments vibrant, showcasing Byzantine art in high detail. The experience here is so impactful that many travelers choose to view the valley from hot air balloons, particularly at sunrise.

Another planet

If you wanted to film a movie about troglodytes living on another planet, you would only need to come to Goreme for the set.

The rocks eroded into chimneys, the caves carved high up in improbable and inaccessible places. Truly surprising to see.
