Visiting Chillon Castle: A fortress on the edge of Lake Geneva
Built on a rocky islet just a few miles from Montreux, Chillon Castle is one of the most visited historic sites in Switzerland. With its preserved medieval architecture and dramatic position on the shores of Lake Geneva, it immerses visitors in centuries of history.
A castle between lake and mountains
The unique character of the castle lies in its location. It appears to float on Lake Geneva, backed by the Chablais mountains. This strategic position allowed it to control passage between Italy and Northern Europe. Inside, the furnished rooms reflect the lives of the Dukes of Savoy who resided here, while the vaulted basements serve as a reminder of its past as a prison.
A place shaped by history
Occupied since the 12th century by the House of Savoy, the castle has seen various periods of occupation. It served as a prison for the reformer François Bonivard, whose story inspired Lord Byron to write his poem "The Prisoner of Chillon." A visit allows you to explore the banquet halls, the richly decorated bedchambers, and the dark dungeons where various prisoners were once held.
An immersive experience
The layout is well designed, with informative signs and recreations that help you visualize medieval life. Numerous activities and guided tours are available, including demonstrations of weaponry and ancient crafts. Climbing the towers offers a striking panorama of the lake and the Alps, which is a highlight of the visit.
While the castle itself is very interesting and well-preserved, it is above all its setting that is impressive. Perched right on the water, it offers a magnificent panorama. Perfect for taking some great photos. The entrance price is very affordable. Plan on about two hours for a full visit. It is a place that I highly recommend to you.
