Visiting the cathedral of Basque football: San Mamés Stadium

Rising like an architectural phoenix from the footprint of its century-old predecessor, the new San Mamés Stadium has displayed its translucent facade across the urban landscape of Bilbao since 2013. This cathedral of modern football pulses with the energy of 53,000 supporters who turn every Athletic Club match into a collective ritual balancing Basque tradition with elite performance.

Why does San Mamés Stadium command such fascination?

As the successor to a legendary lineage beginning in 1913, San Mamés Barria embodies the rebirth of a local icon. Athletic Club, founded in 1898, maintains a philosophy unique in Europe by signing only Basque players or those trained in the region. This cantera policy explains the visceral connection supporters have with their team and justifies the cathedral nickname bestowed upon the venue.

As the seventh-largest stadium in Spain, this modern temple has hosted legends like Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar. As the first European stadium with LEED certification for its sustainable design, it perfectly symbolizes the transformation of Bilbao that began in the 1990s with the Guggenheim.

Revolutionary architecture and technical prowess

The facade of the new San Mamés Stadium is a feat of contemporary engineering. Its translucent membrane, composed of hundreds of programmable panels, illuminates based on events and creates light displays visible from the city center. This architectural skin breathes and pulses like a living organism.

The interior features exceptional acoustics designed to amplify the chants of the fans. The stands, arranged in an amphitheater style, offer maximum proximity to the pitch. The 34-degree slope of the stands creates a wall of supporters that can be intimidating for opposing teams.

The exterior lighting system

More than 3,000 LED units outfit the facade to project complex animations. When Athletic scores, waves of light cascade across the structure. The star pattern of the Champions League illuminates the building during European qualification matches.

Behind the scenes and interactive museum

The 90-minute tour unveils the secrets of this modern cathedral. The ultramodern locker rooms, spanning 240 square meters, reveal the pre-match atmosphere, while the tunnel leading to the pitch allows visitors to experience the tension felt by the players. The press room and mixed zone complete this immersion into the professional football lifestyle.

The AC Museoa, a 1,400-square-meter museum, traces 125 years of history through more than 500 authentic artifacts. A giant video wall made of one hundred screens projects legendary club moments. The trophy room displays the eight Spanish league titles and the 24 Copa del Rey trophies won by the Lions.

Insider tip: Book your tour on a match day to feel the buzz in the surrounding streets. The themed bars on calle Pozas come alive as early as 3 hours before kickoff, creating a unique, electric atmosphere.

Highlights of your visit:

  • Bust of Pichichi: A tribute to the first goalscorer in the stadium's history
  • Historic bench: An authentic seat from the old San Mamés Stadium
  • San Mames BAT VIP area: A prime panoramic view of the entire architectural structure
  • Sacred turf: Walk on the same grass as football legends

Bilbao's new cathedral

Very nice, recently built stadium right next to the old San Mames. Even though it is new, it stays connected to the century-old history of the Athletic Bilbao club. Before every match, the captain of the home team comes to lay flowers at the foot of the statue of the former Basque goalscorer Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, also known as Pichichi, who died of typhus at the age of 29 in 1922.
