Visiting the Hemisférico

The Hemisférico is a massive planetarium that serves as a centerpiece of the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain. Since its inauguration in 1998, it has stood as the first building in the complex to welcome the public. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, the hemispherical structure is intended to resemble a human eye, the medium through which we perceive cinematic imagery. The building rests in a shallow pool, where it creates a striking reflection. Inside, films are projected onto a concave screen measuring 900 square meters (about 9,700 square feet) with a diameter of 24 meters (nearly 79 feet). The facility utilizes three distinct technologies for its 4K digital and 3D screenings: IMAX, the planetarium system, and the Laser Omniscan.

A Symbolic Urban and Cultural Project in Valencia

Plans for the City of Arts and Sciences began in the late 1980s when Joan Lerma, the president of the autonomous community, proposed the idea and commissioned local architect Santiago Calatrava Valls. The complex was constructed within the former riverbed of the Turia river, which was diverted following a series of catastrophic floods in Valencia.

Today, the area functions as a green corridor connecting the city center to the waterfront, featuring landscaped walking paths and extensive water features. The Hemisférico sits alongside other iconic cultural landmarks in Valencia, such as the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía and the Prince Felipe Science Museum.

Another Calatrava

I have to admit I didn't see any movies in this cinema with its incredible architecture, yet another work by Santiago Calatrava. But the place is brilliantly futuristic. The cinema includes different theaters (3D, IMAX, etc.). Opened in early 1998. Go check it out!
