Visiting the Clock Tower

The inner workings are so complex that you need a guide to grasp every detail. A masterpiece of engineering, the Clock Tower is far more than just a striking building on Piazza San Marco. Its construction is tied to the residences and offices of the Procuratori di San Marco (Procurators of Saint Mark), the elite officials of the Republic of Venice. Three of these buildings frame the square, and during the Renaissance, these dignitaries chose to mark the entrance with a grand tower. Designed by the architect Codussi, the resulting structure remains a spectacle.

An astronomical dial, automata, and extraordinary engineering

Serving as both a connecting point between districts and a physical boundary for the Procurators who kept to themselves, the Clock Tower resembles a triumphal arch. Its archway leads toward the Mercerie (Merchant Streets), and this structure holds countless surprises. Before you even examine the internal mechanics, the visual design is what stops you in your tracks. Inaugurated in 1499, it features five levels, highlighted by an astronomical clock finished in blue enamel and gold leaf that shines like a jewel. It displays the time, the zodiac sign, the sun position, moon phases, and the seasons. Discovering the system of pulleys, counterweights, and gears is a highlight of the visit. The terrace above features the Madonna and Child, where statues of the Magi and an angel process every year for Epiphany and Ascension. The Lion of Saint Mark keeps watch just above that, and at the very top, two bronze automata strike a massive bell to mark the hours. Often called the Torre dei Mori (Tower of the Moors) due to the dark finish on the bronze figures, it is one of the most fascinating landmarks in Venice.

An imposing tower

The Clock Tower is located in St. Mark's Square. The tower features an arch that allows tourists to access small alleyways as well as little canals. This monument was one of my favorites because the tower is richly decorated. It has a clock with the signs of the zodiac and also features a winged lion. It is a monument steeped in history that is worth the trip.
