Visiting the Juan March Foundation

In the historic center of Palma, the magnificent 17th-century mansion is a work of art in its own right. It even has a name, the Can Gallard del Canyar. It is within this remarkable architecture that masters of contemporary art have found a fitting home. The Juan March Foundation stands as one of the primary cultural venues in the city. It represents an unexpected blend of genres and eras that function like opposites attracting, with an irresistible pull.

The greatest Spanish contemporary artists

Located a one-minute walk from the Plaça Major (Main Square), the building retains the grandeur of its era. The glass door opens onto a sumptuous entrance courtyard featuring a skylight, mosaics, and a white marble staircase with intricate details. In its center, a sculpture sets the tone, confirming that the Foundation is dedicated to modern art. Juan March Ordinas was a financier who bought the building in 1916, transformed it into a residence, and even established the headquarters of the Banca March there. It was in 1990 that the space opened to the public as a foundation, sharing a collection of contemporary Spanish art, notably the major names of the avant-garde from the late 20th century. Luis Gordillo, Manuel Rivera with his sublime Anatomie pour un miroir (Anatomy for a Mirror), Juan Gris, Antonio Saura, Eduardo Chillida, Gustave Turner, and others are all here. Both painting and sculpture are represented, and the most inspired creators are present. The Perroquet (Parrot) by Joan Miró or the Portrait of Luli Kollsman by Dalí take pride of place in this exceptional ensemble of 69 works. In the museum section, temporary exhibitions are offered throughout the year, maintaining the same level of excellence in the selection of national and international artists. Begun in 1973, the Juan March collection offers a precious archive that is free to explore. It is a compelling visit in a space filled with character.
