What to know about the Jardin d'Acclimatation
Editor's note, updated January 23, 2024
France's oldest amusement park
As the first amusement park in the country, inaugurated in 1860 by Napoleon III and his wife Eugénie, the Jardin d'Acclimatation originally served as a zoological garden. It introduced Parisians to exotic species like antelopes, giraffes, cheetahs, and kangaroos. Designed across 12 acres in the heart of the Bois de Boulogne by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand, architect Gabriel Davioud, and landscape designer Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps, it quickly became a local favorite. Over the years, the park has shifted from its scientific roots to offer a mix of culture and entertainment tailored to modern visitors.
A multifaceted destination
Today, the Jardin d'Acclimatation spans 47 acres. While the land is owned by the city of Paris, it is operated by the LVMH group, which also owns the nearby Fondation Louis Vuitton Museum. Set within a preserved natural landscape with miles of walking paths, the park features roughly 40 attractions, thrill rides, boat rentals, playgrounds, and an animal park home to exotic birds and farm animals. They also host seasonal events ranging from holiday light displays to dinosaur exhibits.
Planning your visit
The garden has three main entrances, Porte Eugénie, Porte Sablons, and Porte Ghandi, with a single exit at Porte Saint-James. You can download a map from their website to locate points of interest based on your group's needs. The park is divided into four sections: Attractions and Culture, which is further split by age group, Nature and Heritage, Dining, and Free Playgrounds. It is an excellent spot for a family outing.
Some activities are free, while others require tickets. You can purchase individual tickets, a booklet of tickets, or an all-inclusive pass that covers the entire park or specific coasters. Don't miss the Korean garden and the large aviary. For children, the boat ride on the enchanted river and the hall of distorted mirrors are local favorites.
What is new
The park frequently updates its lineup. In 2024, Jurassic Island: VR Xperience opened. This 4D cinema experience uses virtual reality headsets, motion seats, and wind effects to simulate a trip back to the time of the dinosaurs.
In March 2025, a new roller coaster called Défi du Dragon (Dragon's Challenge) is set to open. Riders board a dragon themed car that reaches speeds of over 31 mph (50 km/h) and heights of 33 feet (10m), moving both forward and backward.
