Vrijthof is the largest square in Maastricht, tucked into the Binnenstad neighborhood. It is a wide, cobblestone plaza surrounded by restaurants and cafes and framed by notable historic buildings.
A hub for local events
The square serves as a versatile venue, hosting everything from summer concerts to major culinary festivals.
As the hometown of André Rieu, the area comes alive every summer when the violinist performs a series of romantic concerts. Various other performances animate this iconic space throughout the year.
For food lovers, the Preuvenemint is essential. Held on the last weekend of August, this four-day event features about 30 stands where you can sample dishes from top chefs in the Limburg region paired with fine wines, all accompanied by live music.
In December, the square hosts Maastricht Magique, a festive Christmas market. The area is transformed with elaborate light displays, an outdoor ice rink, and a Ferris wheel.
Historic landmarks to explore
On the west side of the square, look for the twin churches of Saint-Servais (Sint Servaaskerk) and Saint-Jean (Sint Janskerk). They are imposing structures with distinct architectural styles. Saint-Servais is a Romanesque, cruciform basilica with three naves. Saint-Jean is easily identified by its 80-meter red tower, which offers expansive views over the city.
Facing the square, the Hôtel du gouvernement espagnol (Spaans Gouvernement) stands as the oldest restored house in Maastricht and now functions as a museum. The Hoofdwacht is a former military guardhouse that has been converted into an exhibition space. It once served as a shelter for the city garrison, where the keys to the city gates and fortifications were kept. The Generaalshuis (General's House) now serves as the building for the Theater aan het Vrijthof. It hosts receptions and weddings in its grand ballroom, which still features its original wall paintings.
This square is truly the heart of the city. It is a lively and bustling place that brings together monuments and churches as well as bars and restaurants. It is the perfect spot to sit down and soak up the city atmosphere. You absolutely have to see it during your stay.
