Visiting La Scala
Even those who are not opera buffs recognize this iconic venue, a symbol of prestige and beauty. Right in the heart of Milan, La Scala stands as the hallowed home of classical music and opera. Founded under Maria Theresa of Austria and passionately driven by the city's wealthy elite, it replaced the Teatro Ducale (Ducal Royal Theater) after it was destroyed by fire in 1776. Since August 3, 1778, it has hosted the biggest names in opera and ballet behind its imposing yet understated facade. Its museum invites visitors to explore a collection of costumes and paintings, making a visit feel like stepping back in time.
Legendary boxes and iconic red velvet
The shade of its red velvet is globally recognized. One glimpse is enough to imagine sitting in one of its six tiers of boxes while the great arias echo through the hall. An illustrious stage for performers and a dream venue for any opera enthusiast, La Scala transcends its primary purpose. The touch of the great neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini turned it into a legend, blending modest galleries with extravagant details like the monumental Bohemian crystal chandelier with 383 light bulbs. The auditorium interior plays with a mix of wood and gilded stucco, where red velvet returns as a recurring signature. Recent renovations have only made the space more functional. The program is kept secret until the official announcement, which is always a major event. While bel canto was the king of the house, the most incredible artists have delivered their art here, including Placido Domingo, Maria Callas, and Barbara Hendricks. While Toscanini gave the theater its international reputation, both the various artistic directors and grandiose productions like Otello, Madame Butterfly, La Traviata, or Nabucco have solidified its place as an essential stage. The museum rounds out a visit, but attending a concert here is an experience to have at least once.
As an opera fan, and especially of Maria Callas, the La Scala theater in Milan was one of the places I dreamed about most. I was not disappointed! I got chills just thinking about all the legends who have sung here. The auditorium itself is really very elegant, with its gilding and red boxes.
