Visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a spiritual landmark in Mexico City
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe stands as one of the most visited shrines in the world, drawing millions of pilgrims annually. Located in the northern part of Mexico City, it is a priority stop for anyone interested in spirituality, religious history, and Mexican culture.
A sanctuary at the heart of the Mexican faith
The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to the indigenous peasant Juan Diego in 1531, tasking him with the construction of a shrine in her honor. The current basilica, completed in 1976, features a modern, tent-like architectural design capable of holding up to 10,000 worshippers. Inside, you can view the famous tilma, a cloak upon which the miraculous image of the Virgin appeared.
A historical and spiritual complex
Beyond the modern basilica, the site includes several other significant religious structures, such as the Old Basilica, a 17th-century baroque building, and the Capilla del Cerrito (Chapel of the Little Hill), built atop the hill where the Virgin is said to have appeared. You can walk through the complex to explore these different structures, each with its own character and history. The view from the hill also provides a wide panorama of the city.
A center for reflection and sacred art
The basilica is more than just a place of worship, it is a center of quiet reflection where visitors, whether religious or not, can experience the unique spiritual atmosphere of the site. In addition to daily masses, the site regularly hosts sacred art exhibitions that add depth to the visitor experience.

If you want to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, you probably won't be able to get inside the building. Pilgrims from all over Latin America come then to worship the Virgin and see with their own eyes the cloak she wore during her apparition. What is miraculous is that this tunic is in excellent condition.
Don't miss visiting Tepeyac Hill, just above the Basilica. You will have a superb view of Mexico City from there. You can also take a look inside the old colonial basilica, even if it is threatening to collapse because of the various earthquakes.
