Visitiing the Madrid City Hall
The Madrid City Hall, or Palacio de Cibeles, is a national historic landmark in Madrid. It formerly served as the Palacio de Comunicaciones (Palace of Communications), housing both the federal post office and telephone exchange infrastructure. Architects Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi designed the structure in a neo-Gothic style between 1907 and 1919, utilizing land that was once part of the parc du Retiro (Retiro Park). It overlooks the famous Plaza de Cibeles and its opulent 1782 fountain, designed by Ventura Rodríguez.
The seat of Madrid government
The palace has served as the city hall of Madrid since 2007. This transition required extensive renovations, most notably the addition of a massive glass dome covering the interior courtyard, known as the Galería de Cristal. An auditorium, the Caja de Música, was also installed in the basement. The building hosts a cultural center, CentroCentro, which spans 8,000 square meters and features rotating art exhibitions.
The building is open to the public. It is worth heading up to the observation deck, Mirador Madrid, for a panoramic view of the city.
The evolution of the Palacio de Cibeles
In 2021, the surrounding area including the Plaza de Cibeles, the Paseo del Prado, the Jerónimos neighborhood, and the parc du Retiro was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site under the Cultural Landscape category. This district of the Spanish capital reflects Enlightenment-era urban planning, highlighted by one of the first tree-lined urban promenades, the Paseo del Prado, and the construction of institutions dedicated to public scientific education.
To showcase this distinction, the Palacio de Cibeles houses an information center designed to educate visitors and locals on the heritage of this part of Madrid.
One of the most beautiful buildings in the city, and for good reason! It overlooks the Plaza de Cibeles. There is a viewpoint you can access from inside for a few euros, which gives you a pretty view of the Gran Via and the Recoleta. It is impossible to visit Madrid without stopping by here, and the city hall is not far from El Retiro Park.
