What to know about Mónsul Beach

Located within the Cabo de Gata Natural Park in Andalusia, Mónsul Beach is one of the most recognizable spots in the region. Known for its distinct volcanic terrain and protected status, it draws those who prefer nature over crowds. It lacks the typical beach club scene, relying instead on a quiet atmosphere and dramatic scenery.

A unique volcanic landscape

Mónsul Beach is defined by rock formations of volcanic origin that give the site an almost lunar appearance. The large crescent-shaped rock sitting in the water, eroded by wind and waves, is the beach's signature feature. This atypical landscape was immortalized in several films, most notably The Last Crusade, from the Indiana Jones saga, making it a destination for film buffs.

A beach for relaxing and exploring

With its fine sand and clear water, Mónsul Beach is ideal for swimming or simply relaxing in a natural setting. The shallow and calm water makes it a solid choice for families. The surrounding area invites exploration, as small coves and coastal trails provide additional vantage points across the Cabo de Gata coast.

Practical tips for your visit

The beach is accessible via an unpaved road starting from San José, the nearest town. During the summer, access is restricted to protect the environment, and shuttle buses run from San José. Pack your own water and snacks, as there are no services on-site. Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon helps avoid the crowds and allows you to catch the best light on this unique landscape.

Beautiful but windy

Beautiful beach with rocks, cliffs, and a natural setting with no concrete. A scene from The Last Crusade was filmed there. However, there was a lot of wind, sea spray, and a strong current. We left pretty quickly.
A few minutes away, the neighboring beach of Los Genoveses was much calmer and better for swimming.
