Visiting the Las Vegas Natural History Museum
The Las Vegas Natural History Museum stands as one of the most recognized institutions in Nevada. Opened in 1991, this private institution earned official accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in 2013. Despite its private status, it ranks among the notable natural history museums in the United States.
You will find it in the cultural district of Downtown Las Vegas, directly across from the library on Las Vegas Boulevard. This specific area of the city is currently branded as the Cultural Corridor.
Exhibits
The museum features several galleries dedicated to permanent collections.
The Treasures of Egypt gallery focuses primarily on the life and legacy of Tutankhamun. The African Gallery showcases dioramas of savannah wildlife. The Prehistoric Exhibit displays a series of large-scale skeletons, complemented by a dedicated section on prehistoric mammals. In the Marine Life gallery, you will find a large aquarium housing sharks and rays, alongside smaller tanks that offer a closer look at various colorful aquatic species. The International Wildlife room displays dozens of taxidermied mammals to demonstrate their evolutionary adaptations. A separate section dedicated to Nevada Wildlife introduces you to animals native to the surrounding desert region.
The visit concludes with the Geology Gallery, which is notable for its collection of fluorescent minerals, and the Young Scientist Center, designed specifically for younger visitors. In this space, children can use microscopes, participate in interactive lessons regarding animals or prehistoric life, and learn how to draw their favorite dinosaurs.
This is a worthwhile stop for families exploring the city.
The must see of Las Vegas. Everyone comes for this museum!
