Have you ever dreamed of traveling back to the Middle Ages? Staying behind the walls of a fortified castle? That is the experience you get at La Citadelle - Puy du Fou in Les Epesses, France.

Once you cross the drawbridge, you enter a courtyard surrounded by timber-framed medieval houses, fortified ramparts, and a garden where medicinal plants grow. Inside the houses and rooms, the decor recreates the aesthetic of French seigneurial castles. Stained glass, murals, lanterns, and carved wooden beds create an atmosphere that is both cozy and distinct.

The 100 rooms at this property measure about 30 square meters (323 square feet) and can accommodate 3 to 5 guests. Depending on the room type, a large double bed is paired with either 2 bunk beds and a cot, or just a single cot. You can also request a crib. The remaining amenities are standard, including air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, television, luggage storage, and free parking.

An immersive and very pleasant medieval stay

One of the best value for money options among the park hotels. From the moment you enter, the castle towers, the decor of the paved courtyard, and the frescoes transport you to another era. The staff in costume are very helpful and welcoming, and they really play the part perfectly. The rooms are very comfortable and reflect the medieval world right down to the bathrooms. I appreciated that the television, a discordant modern device, was cleverly hidden behind a panel so it would not break the experience. Being new and very clean, this castle perhaps just lacks a little wear and tear to be fully convincing. The meals are good, especially the breakfast, even if nothing beats the much more expensive buffet at the Grand Siecle hotel.

A different kind of experience

The ramparts, the inner courtyard, the room decor, and the meals are all themed around the Middle Ages. A fun experience that is much better than a standard hotel.

You feel like you're really there

Great effort on the decor, which successfully invites you to live the castle life for a night or two. The staff is very welcoming and pleasant, the rooms are comfortable and clean, and the breakfast and dinner buffet offers a varied and hearty selection, even if it is not exactly excellent.

To feel like a lord

Real medieval atmosphere inside the walls of this conquerable citadel. The only things missing are the archers on the ramparts to make you feel like you are actually there.
