Things to do in Mangalore: must-see attractions

Visiting Mangalore

Mangalore, or Mangaluru, is a major Indian metropolis located in the southern state of Karnataka, right on the Arabian Sea. Home to more than 600,000 people, the city grew around its massive port operations, which currently handle more than 75% of the country's coffee and cashew exports. The city has deep historical roots, with mentions appearing in the writings of Pliny the Elder as early as the 1st century. European influence arrived in 1498, when Vasco da Gama landed on St Mary's Island, about 40 miles north of the city. While Mangalore serves as the capital for the Tuluva people, it remains a multicultural hub shaped by centuries of international maritime trade.

A dynamic port city

Mangalore houses the 9th largest port in India, and it stands as one of the oldest. It first rose to prominence in the 6th century due to the pepper trade. Today, it is a modern city featuring business districts, skyscrapers, shopping malls, and industrial zones. It is even home to the first and only 3D planetarium in India.

The city is a blend of diverse faiths, with prominent sites for Hinduism, Catholicism, and Islam. You should prioritize the Kadri Manjunath Temple, first built in 1068, which houses ancient Hindu relics. The Saint Aloysius Chapel, constructed by Jesuit missionaries in 1885, features intricate ornaments and vibrant frescoes. The more recent Kudroli Gokarnath Temple is another essential stop, featuring a marble structure dedicated to Shiva that surrounds a sacred pool. Before heading to the sands of Panambur or Tannirbhavi beaches, stop by the fish market near the old port, where you can find the best local dishes based on fresh catch and coconut milk.

The rich cultural and natural heritage of Karnataka

To the east, Mangalore is framed by the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range and forest system. You can book excursions to see the Hanuman Gundi Falls or the Jamalabad Fort, both located within the scenic Kudremukh National Park. Another landmark is the massive 56-foot monolithic statue of Bahubali. Finally, the coastal village of Udupi is a significant spiritual and culinary destination in this part of India.

While in the city, you might encounter traditions of the Tulu-speaking community, such as Yakshagana, a form of folk dance and theater that can last throughout the night.

When to go

The best time to visit Mangalore and the surrounding area is during the winter, specifically between October and April.
