Visiting Praia do Forte, a coastal village blending nature and culture
Located about 50 miles north of Salvador, Praia do Forte evolved from a quiet fishing village into a destination known for its commitment to ecotourism. With beaches lined by coconut palms, coral reefs, and active marine conservation projects, it provides a relaxed environment for exploration.
Project Tamar: a marine turtle conservation center
Project Tamar is a conservation center dedicated to protecting sea turtles. Open to the public, it features educational exhibits and, depending on the season, opportunities to see nesting sites or hatchlings. It is a worthwhile stop to understand the local marine biodiversity.
Garcia d'Ávila Castle: a historic relic
A few miles from the village center, the Garcia d'Ávila Castle stands as one of the few medieval-style constructions in Brazil. Built in the 16th century, it offers a sweeping view of the coast and serves as a reminder of the region's colonial history.
Sapiranga Reserve: an immersion in the Atlantic Forest
The Sapiranga Reserve, accessible by bike or ATV, allows you to explore the local flora and fauna deep in the Atlantic Forest. Marked trails are available for various skill levels.
Beaches and natural pools
The beaches of Praia do Forte are known for their clear water and natural pools carved out by the reefs. At low tide, these basins create calm, shallow swimming areas that feel like protected ocean lagoons.
Bahian culinary flavors
Local cuisine blends African and Brazilian influences. Signature dishes include moqueca (a fish stew cooked with coconut milk) and acarajé (a deep-fried black-eyed pea fritter stuffed with shrimp). Tropical fruits and fresh juices are staples here.
Where to eat?
- Papa Gente (center): A reliable spot for traditional plates and a casual, welcoming atmosphere.
- Sabor da Vila (center): Known for a wide selection of moquecas and other regional specialties.
- Terra Brasil Restaurante e Choperia (center): Offers classic Bahian dishes in a comfortable, open-air setting.
Where to stay?
- Porto da Lua Boutique Hotel (beachfront): A property right on the sand with direct ocean views.
- Hotel Via dos Corais (center): Situated in the heart of the village, just steps from the local shops and restaurants.
- Porto Zarpa Hotel (center): A family-friendly option featuring a private garden and pool.
When to go?
The period from December to March is ideal for hot, dry weather and local festivities. If you are interested in wildlife, the months of July to October provide a chance to spot humpback whales migrating off the coast.
How to get there?
From Salvador, Praia do Forte is about a 90-minute drive via the BA-099 highway. Regular bus services and private transfers are both available for those who do not want to rent a car.
Getting around
The village is compact and easy to navigate on foot. For exploring the surrounding areas, bicycle rentals and guided ATV excursions are available locally.
A very concrete-heavy seaside resort where all the people from Salvador hang out on the weekends. I would choose the village of Imbassaí a little further north, which has better preserved its primary forest (Mata Atlantica).
