A century-old brand with a global footprint

When you look at major car rentals, it is hard to overlook Sixt. The company started in Germany over a century ago, back when the automotive industry was still in its infancy and long before the two world wars that the firm managed to survive and eventually outgrow.

The story begins in Munich in 1912, when Martin Sixt used his modest fleet of three cars to launch a rental business. Despite having vehicles seized by the German military during the two world wars that followed, the company thrived through the 1990s before beginning a rapid international expansion that turned it into the giant we know today.

The brand holds the top spot in its home market of Germany, as well as in neighboring Switzerland and Austria. It is a global leader, currently operating in more than 100 countries with over 2,200 locations worldwide, including 1,500 in Europe and 200 in France.

A brand with many strings to its bow

This is a true multinational that carved out a space in the highly competitive world of car rentals by focusing on several key pillars:

  • a complete and varied range of rental vehicles: compact cars, family sedans, convertibles, SUVs, minivans, pickups, luxury cars, sports cars, and electric vehicles.
  • quality of service: a fleet of new vehicles (averaging six months old), modern and innovative accessories (Connected Drive systems, Bluetooth, GPS), and a status as the world's largest purchaser of BMW vehicles.
  • a presence in every segment: rentals for individuals and corporate solutions, passenger and commercial vehicle rentals, luxury chauffeur services, moving truck rentals, wedding car rentals, and leasing.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of the services offered by a brand that has one primary objective: to become a comprehensive provider of mobility solutions.

No issues

I have used this rental company only once and the experience was very satisfying. The employees were all very professional, and I was not pushed into extra purchases like can happen with other rental agencies. Everything went well. The service is convenient and well managed.

Top notch cars and service

Used this service several times, in different branches and different countries. Never disappointed. The agents are professional and courteous, the cars are always spotless, I get free upgrades when the model I booked isn't available, and there are never any shady charges on my security deposit.

A bit pricey but super professional

I have used this service several times and never had any issues. The staff is courteous and the cars are spotless (I have been upgraded for free several times). Many locations offer 24/7 returns with a drop-off parking lot and a key box. There is no in-person inspection when you return the vehicle outside of business hours, but they have never tried to squeeze extra money out of me.
The only downside is the price, which is quite high.

Reliable agency with lots of options

I have had the opportunity to rent a car from Sixt several times, and I have always been satisfied with my experience. The agents are always polite and helpful, and they are very professional.

The booking and rental process is simple and fast. It is possible to book a car online or by phone. Once you are there, picking up the vehicle is done quickly and without any issues.

The car I rented was always in good condition and well maintained.

High prices but top notch customer service

This is clearly not the cheapest agency. It is pretty easy to find better deals on the internet.
On the other hand, the customer service is really top notch. The welcome at the branch is super courteous, they take you to your vehicle, or they bring it to you. They explain its quirks if needed. The check-in is done calmly. In many branches, you can return the vehicle outside of opening hours with a box to drop off the keys. You receive the check-out report by email. As a side note, I returned a vehicle with a few scrapes on the fender, and I was worried about an abusive charge of several hundred euros (I have heard so many stories like that), but nothing happened!
Like Bill, I have been upgraded on several occasions.
In short, for long trips, if you want peace of mind, I recommend Sixt.

Great customer service

I have rented cars from Sixt several times, both in France and abroad. In general, it has always gone well.

One time, they tried to charge me for an extra day. I returned the car to the agency parking lot at a time when the staff was no longer working, and I left my keys in a drop box. I do not know why (a technical glitch), but my return was recorded the next day. Fortunately, we had taken a photo of the parking ticket left under the windshield. At first, it was an unpleasant surprise, but the good news is that one email exchange, with the photo as proof, was enough to fix the situation.

It has also happened that I was upgraded at no extra cost because the vehicle I reserved was not available.

In short, I feel pretty confident with Sixt. You just need to remember to photograph the parking ticket when you return the car without handing the keys over in person.
