A recent airline with explosive growth
Known first for its natural gas reserves, Qatar has lately made a name for itself through its world-class national carrier. Qatar Airways was launched in 1997 under the leadership of Akbar Al Baker. Despite its relative youth, the airline has established itself among industry leaders, as shown by its 5-star Skytrax rating and its 5 Airline of the Year awards from the same agency in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
Speaking of records, Qatar Airways also lays claim to the fastest growth in civil aviation history between 1997 and 2017. Its fleet grew from just 4 aircraft in 1997 to over 220 today.
An ambitious growth strategy and unmatched service quality
These impressive results stem from several factors:
- unwavering support from the Qatari state;
- maintaining a modern fleet with an average aircraft age of 6.8 years, fully equipped with the latest amenities;
- an aggressive sports-focused marketing strategy featuring major investments in soccer and Formula E;
- the continuous expansion of Hamad International Airport in Doha. Its top-tier infrastructure and constant upgrades propelled it from 75th to 5th place in the 2018 Skytrax rankings;
- finally, First and Business classes that rank among the most comfortable and innovative on the market. Economy class is hardly an afterthought either, offering exceptional perks usually reserved for business class on legacy carriers.
Naturally, this level of prestige and quality requires a solid budget, but for Qatar Airways, the goal is to pamper passengers in the sky before touching down on any of the 6 continents served by the airline.
Qatar Airways, along with Etihad Airways, are among the best airlines right now. Their planes are very new and super comfortable. They provide real blankets, not just scraps of fabric like others do. The meals are hearty. They are generous with drinks (I am not talking about alcohol), but tea, coffee, and soft drinks. The flight attendants are very attentive and my flights have always gone well. Bravo!
