Understanding Bourse des Vols, a pioneer of the French online travel industry

The birth of an innovative concept

The story of Bourse des Vols began in February 1997 when Fabrice Dariot launched the 3615 Bourse des Vols service on Minitel. A young graduate of the Paris Institute of Statistics and the French Institute of Actuaries, this Parisian entrepreneur was barely 35 years old at the time.

His concept was ahead of its time. It allowed travelers to compare airfare prices directly from their own homes. In a tourism market still dominated by brick and mortar travel agencies, this innovation addressed a genuine consumer need.

Immediate success on Minitel

The service found an audience right away. By 1998, 3615 Bourse des Vols had become the third most frequented Minitel service in France.

In 1999, the company expanded its operations by creating Bourse des Voyages. The offering then grew to include package tours in addition to standalone flights. This dual strategy remains the foundation of its market position today.

The shift to the web

Viaticum, the company's legal structure, anticipated the digital revolution early on. In February 2000, it launched the website bdv.fr, becoming one of the first French online travel agencies to migrate to the web.

By 2001, the site ranked among the top ten online travel sites in the country. The transition from Minitel to the internet was a success.

A proven capacity for innovation

Strategic partnerships

Throughout its history, Bourse des Vols distinguished itself by anticipating technological shifts in the industry. In 2002, the company formed strategic partnerships with major players such as Go Voyages, which became its primary online commercial partner.

The year 2003 marked a turning point with the signing of agreements with about thirty tour operators. Revenue reached 11 million euros (about $12 million). That same year, Viaticum successfully sued Google in the Versailles Court of Appeal for trademark infringement.

A pioneer in geolocation

In 2006, the agency deployed a niche development strategy. It created ten micro-sites targeting direct departures from ten provincial cities.

The following year, in 2007, Bourse des Vols became the first online travel agency to integrate geolocation. Offers began to adapt based on the user's physical location.

Artificial intelligence and financial recognition

More recently, in the first half of 2023, the company collaborated with the French academic sector. The goal was to develop prototypes for travel services based on artificial intelligence.

In 2017, the Banque de France assigned the company an H4 rating. This certification confirmed its ability to meet financial commitments over a three-year horizon. That same year, Bourse des Vols recorded its 19th consecutive year of profit.

A comprehensive range of travel services

A global aviation network

Bourse des Vols positioned itself as a player aiming for total coverage in air transport. The platform relies on search algorithms that query a vast database.

This database includes approximately 500 airlines and 1,200 airports worldwide. The technical approach aims to offer travelers the most competitive rates on the market, regardless of the destination or time of year.

The service covers major international airlines as well as regional and low-cost carriers. This diversity is a core strength of the platform.

Package tours and editorial content

Alongside the sale of standalone flights, Bourse des Voyages offers more elaborate products. Circuits, vacations, cruises, and vacation rentals make up this extensive range.

For this activity, the company partnered with more than fifty recognized tour operators. The official blog, launched in 2014, enhances the editorial offering with tips, suggestions, and information for travelers.

Significant financial growth

Between 2003 and 2011, the company's revenue grew from 11 million euros (about $12 million) to 56 million euros (about $61 million). This progression demonstrates significant growth over that period.

A turning point marked by liquidation and acquisition

IATA requirements

In July 2023, the IATA (International Air Transport Association) demanded that Viaticum provide a guarantee representing 80 percent of its revenue within 30 days. This request came despite a profitable fiscal year.

Unable to secure this bank guarantee, the IATA suspended the agency's rights to issue airline tickets via the BSP system on August 16, 2023. The company was thus deprived of its primary revenue source.

Judicial liquidation

This decision led to a rapid deterioration of the company's financial situation. The Paris Commercial Court ordered the judicial liquidation of Viaticum on September 21, 2023, after 27 years of uninterrupted profitable activity.

The 25 employees of the company were laid off by the judicial representative. This bankruptcy marked the end of an entrepreneurial journey that had previously demonstrated strong financial stability.

Acquisition by Resaneo

In October 2023, the Paris Commercial Court approved the acquisition of Viaticum's intangible assets by Resaneo. This booking platform is dedicated to travel professionals. The acquisition price was 51,000 euros (about $55,000).

This acquisition included the Bourse des Vols and Bourse des Voyages brands, the websites, domain names, and software. Raphael Torro, president of Resaneo, expressed his intention to relaunch both brands by leveraging their history of organic search ranking on Google.

A new beginning

The site bourse-des-vols.com is operational once again. It offers flight and package tour booking services under its new management.

Fabrice Dariot, the founder of the company, has moved on to new projects. He is now dedicating his time to artificial intelligence and literary publishing.

Cheap flight to Washington

Hello, A round trip from Paris to Washington was €480 (about $515) with a major airline, Brussels Airlines, on Bourse des vols. Well, it was the most affordable price after checking all over the web. I bought it right away without hesitation, and everything went off without a hitch. It is always nice to get cheap prices, but it is not every day!

A satisfied regular

I have gotten used to booking tickets on Bourse des vols after a few purchases that went well. I haven't had to make any complaints up until now. Like on other sites, you have to search for destinations, but the best thing about bdv is that you don't get lost in the interface. It is simple and perfectly clear, and you also have a lot more choice when it comes to pricing.

Several flights departing from Strasbourg

I decided to take some time off to go to Mumbai in November, and for my ticket, I went to Bourse des Vols again. I have already made a few purchases there over the last two years and everything has always gone well. I got my ticket for 477 euros this time for a round trip departing from Strasbourg.

Easy-to-use site

The Bourse des Vols site gets a thumbs up visually because it is well laid out and doesn't have too many ads. You can find your way around right away with the different sections. As for the prices, I admit they are pretty interesting. You can find good deals on many destinations that you don't see on other sites, and their service is decent. The articles on the blog are a nice little plus too.

Reduced price

We decided to treat ourselves to a little family trip to Shanghai for the upcoming holidays, and for that we chose Bourse des vols because their price fit our budget. Of course, before choosing bdv, we compared several price ranges on other airlines.

Some good deals

I use this site from time to time, especially when I am looking for good deals. Yes, with a little luck, you can sometimes find sales. Or at least prices that are a bit cheaper compared to the competitors. It also lets you see the prices offered by different airlines for the same destination, for example. Convenient! In any case, I have had no issues with this site.

Check your spam for the e-tickets

Hi, I am also satisfied with my booking on bdv. While looking for a ticket to New York, I easily found myself looking at about ten options, and I was able to make my reservation in just a few clicks. For the email confirmation, you should never forget to check your spam folder, as that has happened to me once before.
