Swayambhunath, or the Monkey Temple, is a spiritual landmark in Kathmandu perched on a hill with views over the valley. This Buddhist stupa, adorned with the eyes of Buddha, is surrounded by shrines and temples. Reach it by climbing 365 steps. You will find prayer flags, resident monkeys, and a window into Nepal spirituality.
The World Peace Stupa, perched on Anadu Hill in Pokhara, is a Buddhist monument dedicated to global harmony. It offers panoramic views of Phewa Lake and the snow-capped Annapurna range. Reach this white-domed landmark by hiking, off-road vehicle, or a boat-to-trail combination. It is a quiet spot for meditation in the Nepal hills.
Rising 36 meters, the Boudhanath stupa dominates Kathmandu as one of the world's largest spherical stupas. A UNESCO site and center for Tibetan Buddhism since the 5th century, it draws hundreds of faithful daily for the kora ritual. Buddha's all-seeing eyes watch over monks, prayer wheels, and colorful flags across this serene Tibetan neighborhood.

My favorite spot in Kathmandu! Such a peaceful place. The white dome with its Buddha eyes is fascinating. I recommend walking around it with the locals and the monks, and spinning the prayer wheels. There are plenty of shops and cafes with a view of the stupa, where you can sit down and enjoy this moment of calm.

Follow the procession and walk around the monument, under the big eyes of Buddha and the many colorful flags, a must!

Swayambhunath, near the center of Kathmandu, is a must-see Buddhist temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. You have to take the time to explore the whole park in the company of the monkeys, which, I should point out, are not aggressive at all. Once at the top, you will see a magnificent stupa whose benevolent gaze watches over the city. Legend has it that this temple emerged from the waters at the origin of the city. You can take beautiful photos at sunset and admire the rituals of the monks who prostrate themselves on the ground and spin the prayer wheels.

The World Peace Stupa in Pokhara is a must-see in the city. You usually head to Pokhara before or after a demanding trek in Nepal. A quiet day around the lake can be a nice change of pace. You can set aside an hour or two for the World Peace Stupa, but it is not my favorite place in the country. It is a giant Buddha statue, but you can see everything pretty quickly. On a clear day, the view of the lake and the mountains is superb. I chose to go by car, but a good option is to take a boat from the town center and then hike up on foot.
