Visiting St. Pierre Cathedral

Dominating the Old Town, St. Pierre Cathedral stands as a landmark of Geneva. It has survived centuries of wear, and its various restorations have created a structure that can feel eclectic. Its architecture draws from many different styles, and while it has been Protestant since 1535, ecumenical celebrations make it a church for all Genevans. It is a site of immense historical and cultural value, recognized as part of the European Heritage list. From the top of its towers to the underground vaults, it holds many surprises.

A unique place of worship and history

In 1158, the residents of Geneva joined forces to build the cathedral, and by 1288, it stood prominently on its hill. Its current layout reflects that original construction, even if fires and conflicts forced radical changes between the 13th and 15th centuries. For nearly a millennium, the site was dedicated to Catholicism before becoming the primary Protestant church of the city. Its neoclassical portico, added in 1756, leads to an interior where Romanesque and Gothic capitals highlight its past. These are the most extensive examples in Switzerland. Stained glass windows cast light across a space that, despite the stripped-back aesthetic typical of Calvinism, remains a work of art through its intricate woodwork, ironwork, and stone carvings. The Chapelle des Macchabées (Chapel of the Maccabees), dating back to 1411, is a standout for its flamboyant Gothic style. However, the highlight of the visit is not found in the notable organs or the bells. You must head toward the sky by climbing the 157 steps of the north tower. A 360 degree view offers a perspective of Geneva and Lake Geneva. Below ground, an archaeological site showcasing ruins of churches from the 4th century and remnants of ancient life rounds out the experience.

Nice view from the top of the tower

I am not really crazy about the exterior, which mixes Romanesque and Gothic styles with varying degrees of success. On the other hand, you can climb up a tower to the bell tower and see a pretty view of the city, the lake, the jet, and the mountains.
