Granada Cathedral: Spain's Golden Age carved from Escúzar stone

Seeing the baroque facade by Alonso Cano for the first time is a striking experience. Three monumental arches stack like a triumphal gate, creating deep shadows against the honey-colored sandstone. At your feet lies the lively market of the Plaza de la Lonja (the square adjacent to the Royal Hospital); above, the tower stands partially cloaked in scaffolding, undergoing restoration since 2024.

Why visit Granada Cathedral?

Built over the foundations of the city's Great Mosque after the 1492 Reconquista, the Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de la Encarnación (Metropolitan Cathedral of the Incarnation) stands as Spain's first true Renaissance edifice. Work began in 1529 under Diego de Siloé and spanned nearly two centuries, resulting in a structure that reflects a long negotiation between royal ambition and limited budgets.

The cathedral is currently celebrating its fifth centenary, a milestone lasting until 2028. This occasion prompted a major restoration of the tower, launched in the fall of 2024 by the Archbishopric with a budget exceeding 1.2 million EUR (about $1.3 million). By December 2025, the second section of the tower had returned to its original state and the scaffolding was being dismantled. The project is nearing completion.

Architecture and bold design choices

Diego de Siloé inherited a pre-existing Gothic layout and completely reimagined it. He designed a hybrid plan: a basilica nave with five aisles separated by twenty massive pillars, leading into a circular main chapel. This solution was directly inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. No other 16th-century Spanish cathedral attempted such a design.

Light is a central element of the structure. The large Flemish stained-glass windows in the round chapel, created by Teodoro de Holanda and Juan del Campo, cast a golden glow that makes the columns appear even taller than they are. Expect to spend time looking up.

Highlights of the interior

The cathedral features fifteen side chapels, with a few standing out for their artistic significance. Here are the essentials:

  • The Main Chapel: A reredos painted by Alonso Cano adorns its circular walls. The large canvases depicting the Annunciation and the Assumption feel remarkably modern for the 17th century.
  • The Chapter Museum: Features sculptures by Alonso de Mena and Pedro de Mena, alongside paintings by Bocanegra, Sánchez-Cotán, and Pacheco. It is a dense collection of Andalusian art from the Golden Age.
  • The facade of the Capilla Real, accessible from the interior: Its restoration was completed in June 2025, revealing the original white of the local Granada stone.

Pro tip: Starting in June 2026, individual admission will increase to 10 EUR (about $11) to support a major exhibition for the fifth centenary. If you visit before then, the current 7 EUR (about $7.50) ticket price already includes an audioguide via mobile app.

The tower and future observation deck

The single completed tower stands 50 meters (164 feet) tall, though Siloé originally planned for two 80-meter (262-foot) towers. Current restoration work addresses a structural issue that persisted for decades: an inverted roof that allowed rainwater to seep in. Once work finishes, a panoramic terrace at 56 meters (184 feet) in height will open to the public, offering 360-degree views of the Vega, the Sierra Nevada, and the Albaicín.

This lookout is not yet open, but it is worth keeping in mind for future trip planning.

A splendid symbol of the Spanish Renaissance

For me, this is one of the must-see monuments in Granada. The exterior facade has some very pretty, intricate details and the interior is breathtaking. I really loved the light, which is very bright thanks to the white columns and the vibrant stained glass. The sculptures, the gilding, and the dome are sumptuous. I recommend taking the time to see the chapels and the treasury. I found the audioguide quite useful for understanding the history of the monument, which is not very detailed otherwise.

Truly beautiful

I was blown away by the architecture of this cathedral. There are so many finely crafted details on the facade. The pristine white interior is also worth a look. There is so much gilding, statues, and artwork. You really feel like you are in a museum.
