Dumaluan Beach: Two kilometers of white sand away from the Alona chaos
The sand is so fine it crunches slightly underfoot, almost like confectioners sugar. At Dumaluan, on the southern coast of Panglao, the sound of the surf replaces the bass beats of the bars. That is exactly its appeal. Located barely ten minutes from Alona Beach, this stretch of sand feels like it belongs to another world.
Why visit Dumaluan Beach?
This two-kilometer coastline is part of the same shore as Alona, but the atmosphere is drastically different. You will find fewer street vendors, fewer motorboats, and sand that is regularly raked each morning by the crews from the beachfront resorts. The seafloor slopes very gently, which makes it particularly well-suited for families with young children.
Dumaluan is part of the province of Bohol, a region often known for its famous Chocolate Hills or the tarsier. It is a mistake to overlook its beaches. This one, ranked among the best in the area by many travelers, is well worth setting aside a full half-day or even spending a night there.
The natural setting: palms, turquoise water, and sandy seafloor
The color of the water changes throughout the day. Early in the morning, facing the sunrise (Dumaluan faces east-southeast), it takes on golden and copper hues. By midday, under the overhead sun, it shifts to a deep turquoise that contrasts with the white sand. The coconut trees leaning over the beach provide natural shade, a rarity on the beaches of Panglao.
Starfish and sea urchins inhabit the shallows. It is recommended to wear water shoes when swimming. The water remains shallow for a long distance, which makes it easy to enjoy long walks in waist-deep water without any effort.
Pro tip: The sunrise at Dumaluan is one of the best on the island. Arrive before 6 AM to have the beach almost to yourself and enjoy the low-angled light on the wet sand. This is the hour when you will understand why some travelers prefer it to every other beach on Panglao.
Activities and beach atmosphere
For those who enjoy calm and swimming
Dumaluan is not a destination for surfing or deep-water diving. Its gently sloping seafloor makes it primarily a beach for quiet swimming, lounging under the palms, and long walks. The calm waters are very well suited for inexperienced swimmers and children. Kayaks are available for rent through some of the resorts.
Snorkeling, coral, and marine life
Snorkeling spots are located nearby, accessible by kayak or bangka (traditional Filipino outrigger boat). The beach itself does not offer a reef directly from the shore, but dive operators based in Alona organize excursions that include this sector. Several reputable dive centers are less than a ten-minute tricycle ride away.
Things to pack for a day at Dumaluan:
- High-protection sunscreen (the tropical sun is intense by midday)
- Water shoes (sea urchins are present in some areas)
- Cash in PHP: small stands rarely accept cards
- Water and snacks if you want to avoid the resort restaurants
Why it makes a great alternative to Alona
- Powdery white sand, some of the finest on Panglao
- Calm atmosphere, without the noise pollution from the Alona bars
- Very suitable for families with children thanks to the gently sloping seafloor
- Spectacular sunrises over the sea
- Beach well-maintained in the morning by resort staff
Things to keep in mind
- Frequent presence of floating seaweed in the water depending on the season
- Access to the beach is often dependent on passing through a resort (variable entry fees)
- Water is shallow for long distances, which is not ideal for experienced swimmers
- Few independent restaurants or businesses outside of hotel establishments

Even though it is very busy with tourists, I really enjoyed the island of Bohol.
Its natural beauty is undeniable, with superb beaches that are perfect for relaxing, and a pleasant atmosphere despite the crowds.
Special mention for Dumaluan Beach, a beautiful white sand beach that is a little less crowded than the other beaches.
You can also find cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops there.
But what makes Bohol even more special is, of course, the presence of the famous Chocolate Hills, which is a unique site. A destination that is really worth discovering.
