What to know about S'Abanell Beach, the sandy mile that kicks off the Costa Brava
S'Abanell Beach is not a hidden cove, but a generous and lively invitation to seaside living. Its golden sands seem to stretch for miles, bordered by the deep blue of the Mediterranean and a bustling promenade where the heart of Blanes beats strongest.
Why this beach is the centerpiece of Blanes
Spanning nearly two miles, S'Abanell is the largest beach in town and one of the most expansive in the entire province of Girona. Its accessibility and full range of amenities make it a natural gathering spot for families, groups of friends, and anyone looking to combine lounging with effortless activity.
It is an energetic beach that integrates perfectly with the town, offering a complete snapshot of the most welcoming side of the Costa Brava.
Sa Palomera: more than just a rock
At its northern end, the beach is marked by an iconic rocky islet: Sa Palomera. This promontory is not just for postcards, as it represents kilometer zero, the official start of the famous Costa Brava. A small, maintained path allows you to climb to the top for an exceptional panorama of the Blanes coastline, with S'Abanell on one side and the central town beach on the other.
A day timed to the sun and sea
Family atmosphere and watersports
In the morning, the beach wakes up slowly as the first swimmers and families arrive to set up their umbrellas. The sand is coarse and golden, so it does not stick uncomfortably to your skin. The water gets deep relatively quickly, which is a plus for serious swimmers. It is an ideal playground for a variety of activities.
- Rental of pedal boats for a family outing.
- Paddle surf sessions to glide over the waves.
- Windsurfing lessons once the breeze picks up.
- Playgrounds for children located directly on the sand.
The gentle pace of late afternoon
As the sun begins to set, the atmosphere at S'Abanell shifts. The promenade lights flicker on and the terraces of the chiringuitos, or beach bars, fill up. It is the perfect time to sip a cold drink facing the sea, feet still sandy, while listening to the waves wash against the shore.
Local tip: For a quieter experience, even in the middle of summer, walk toward the southern end of the beach in the direction of Malgrat de Mar. Less crowded, this area offers more space to lay down your towel away from the central activity and hosts a camping area that gives it a more laid back vibe.
Long sandy beach bordered by the road, rows of hotels, and apartment buildings. Some people like it, but not me, not really.
