La Mongie

Where to stay near La Mongie: the 4 areas to know in 2026

At La Mongie, the question of where to sleep has an answer almost no resort can give: you can sleep at the summit. The cable car leaves from the resort and climbs to the Pic du Midi observatory, at 2,877 metres, which opens 27 places a night between a sunset and a sunrise. The rest of the time, you sleep at 1,800 metres, at the foot of the pistes.

The other thing to know concerns the pass. The Grand Tourmalet ski area brings together La Mongie and Barèges on the two flanks of the Col du Tourmalet, at 2,115 metres, and that pass is closed in winter. The two sides therefore meet on skis in a few minutes, and by road in 90.9 kilometres. Picking your side is not a detail.

La Mongie, at the foot of the pistes At 1,800 metres, at the cable car departure

Anyone who wants to ski from opening time and ride up the Pic du Midi without a car

The resort occupies a shelf below the pass, and everything there is reachable in ski boots: the lifts, the rental shops, and the cable car station that climbs to the summit. The accommodation is made of flats and residences, not hotels, and their scores vary widely: the location draws excellent remarks almost everywhere, the rest far less. People come here for the ski area and for the peak, not for the setting.

Where to stay in this area

La Mongie Résidence Tourmalet Mid-range

Nothing in the resort scores better with us, and the location remark comes close to the maximum: the lifts are at the door.

Pros

  • The lifts and the cable car on foot
  • In front of you, the largest French Pyrenean ski area
  • Flats rather than rooms, for families

Cons

  • Hardly a hotel, and very uneven scores
  • A functional resort, with no old village
2

The summit of the Pic du Midi, at 2,877 metres At the top of the cable car, inside the observatory

Anyone who wants a night that stays with them, and accepts spending only one

This is the most unexpected answer on this page, and it is real: the Pic du Midi observatory, built between 1878 and 1908, takes 27 people a night, in 12 double rooms and 3 single rooms. You ride up by cable car from the resort, you stay when the visitors go back down, and the evening unfolds on the terraces, at the planetarium, then in front of a telescope. Nothing like a base for a stay: one night, and the places are counted.

Pros

  • The sun setting and rising at 2,877 metres
  • A planetarium and telescopes after closing time
  • The cable car leaves from the resort itself

Cons

  • 27 places a night, not one more
  • One night, not a week: you still need a base below
3

Barèges, the other side of the pass 15.2 kilometres over the pass, closed in winter

Anyone who wants a spa village and the best rooms on the ski area

Past the pass, Barèges is a stone village that lived off its waters long before it lived off skiing, and its hotels dominate the scores of the area by a distance. You ski the same area from here, through its own lifts. But the pass road closes in winter: reaching La Mongie by car then takes 90.9 kilometres by way of Lourdes, where skis cover the distance in a few minutes. In other words, you choose your side for the whole week.

Bagnères-de-Bigorre, the town below 26 kilometres away, in the Campan valley

Anyone who wants a spa town, valley prices and an airport close by

The resort belongs administratively to Bagnères-de-Bigorre, and the town lies 26 kilometres below, where the valley opens out. It is a spa town with its baths, its shopping streets and hotels that do not wait for the snow to open, at rates far from those of a piste departure. Tarbes-Lourdes airport is only 48.5 kilometres away: that makes it the obvious base for a stay that does not ski every day.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • A night at the summit is prepared like a theatre ticket: The Pic du Midi observatory, built between 1878 and 1908, takes only 27 people a night, in 12 double rooms and 3 single rooms. The evening includes the cable car ride up from La Mongie, the panoramic terraces, a planetarium show, dinner, the sunset and the sunrise, then astronomy sessions. In other words, it is not one more room in the resort: it is a whole evening, and it has to be fixed before the rest of the trip.
  • The pass closes, and that decides your week: The Grand Tourmalet skis from one flank to the other without difficulty, but the road linking the two villages goes over the Col du Tourmalet, at 2,115 metres, impassable in winter. Sleeping in Barèges and wanting to dine in La Mongie, or the other way round, then means 90.9 kilometres by way of Lourdes, against 15.2 kilometres in summer. The side is therefore chosen for the whole stay, and it is the only irreversible decision on this page.
  • Studios up top, hotels down below: Our survey is clear: at La Mongie the accommodation is made of flats and residences, whose scores vary a great deal, while Barèges lines up village hotels that reach the best remarks in this whole guide. If you want a properly kept room, a dinner served and a breakfast, look first at the other side or at the town below, then check what the road will cost you.
Where not to stay near La Mongie
  • Booking a night at the summit expecting to improvise: the observatory takes only 27 people, and the evening begins once the cable car has taken the visitors back down.
  • Sleeping in Barèges while planning trips to La Mongie: in winter the closed pass imposes 90.9 kilometres by way of Lourdes.
  • Choosing La Mongie while looking for an old village: the resort is functional, and the old stone lies beyond the pass.

FAQ: where to stay near La Mongie

Can you really sleep at the summit of the Pic du Midi?
Yes. The observatory, at 2,877 metres according to the summit's own site, takes 27 people a night, in 12 double rooms and 3 single rooms. The evening includes the cable car ride up from La Mongie, the terraces, a planetarium show, dinner, the sunset then the sunrise and astronomy sessions. Places are therefore rare, and they are taken months ahead.
Is it better to sleep in La Mongie or in Barèges?
Both give access to the same ski area, the Grand Tourmalet, which exceeds 100 kilometres of pistes. La Mongie has the Pic du Midi cable car and accommodation in flats, whose scores vary a lot. Barèges offers a spa village and the best hotel scores in the area. The real difference is winter: the Col du Tourmalet is closed, and crossing from one side to the other by car takes 90.9 kilometres.
Is the ski area large?
It exceeds 100 kilometres of pistes spread over the two flanks of the pass, and presents itself as the largest in the French Pyrenees. The top of the La Mongie sector also opens onto the Pic du Midi, where skiing is high mountain terrain.
Why are there so few hotels in La Mongie?
Because the resort was built for skiing, in flats. Our survey of the listings finds almost nothing but rentals and residences, with scores running from 5.1 to 8.5: the location is nearly always praised, the comfort far less. The properly kept hotels are in Barèges and Bagnères-de-Bigorre.
What is there to do on days without skiing?
Go up the Pic du Midi, first, which can also be visited for the day. Then go down: Barèges and Bagnères-de-Bigorre are two spa towns, the second 26 kilometres away, with its baths and its shops. Luz-Saint-Sauveur, 22.1 kilometres away, completes the picture on the valley side.
How do you get here?
Through Tarbes and the Campan valley: Tarbes-Lourdes airport is 48.5 kilometres away and Bagnères-de-Bigorre 26. In winter the road stops at the resort on the La Mongie side, since the Col du Tourmalet is not cleared; on the Barèges side, you come up through Luz-Saint-Sauveur.
