Lake Maggiore: reviews and practical tips

Lac Majeur

Visiting Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore is one of the major lakes in northern Italy. Positioned on the border between Switzerland and Italy, it is known for serving as a long-standing residence for the Borromeo family. They still own two islands on Lake Maggiore that are part of the Borromean Islands: Isola Madre and Isola Bella. Isola Bella hosts the Borromeo Palace, a lavish 17th-century baroque estate filled with art. A smaller palace stands on Isola Madre, which today serves as a museum dedicated to puppet theater. The grounds are surrounded by a flower-filled park where peacocks roam freely.

Stresa and the Borromean Gulf

You can depart from Stresa to explore the Borromean Islands and Isola Pescatori. More traditional than its neighbors, Isola Pescatori has maintained its classic fishing village charm with narrow lanes that are great for walking, offering plenty of views of the surrounding water.

From Stresa, you can take a cable car to the summit of Mount Mottarone, a natural area ideal for high-adrenaline sports like mountain biking and paragliding. Halfway up, another stop brings you to the heart of the Alpinia botanical garden.

Sites to see around Lake Maggiore

There is no shortage of things to see around Lake Maggiore. First, the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro, built directly into the cliffside, is striking. For history buffs, do not miss the medieval fortress of Angera that overlooks the lake. Beyond its ancient frescoes, it now houses a doll museum that appeals to both children and adults.
